Hi all, question regarding the civics test. Some of the questions specify they only want you to name one, two or three items, but what about the other questions?

Are you expected to give all the answers for the ones that don’t specify?

For example:

What did the Declaration of Independence do?
▪ announced our independence (from Great Britain)
▪ declared our independence (from Great Britain)
▪ said that the United States is free (from Great Britain)

Do they expect me to repeat all the answers listed or just one?

Thanks in advance!

Judging from the options, which essentially mean the same thing, I think one answer would suffice.

Three ways of saying the same thing, so I'd imagine one of those answers would be fine.  And even put differently would probably be fine.  :)

Exactly my question too. It never specify to give one but I would assumed one is fine since the meaning of all the answers are the same.

How about this question. Are they expecting us to give the 3 answers?

Question: Why did the colonist fight the British?

Because of high taxes

Because the British army stayed in their houses

Because they didn’t have self-government

Just one of the 3 answers. Those are all reasons - they expect one answer.

Had my interview today at the Fairfax VA field office.  I applied under the 5-year rule.  The whole affair was smooth as silk.  Interview was at 11am but I arrived early around 10am.  Security check took around 10min.  After the initial check, I went to the N400 waiting area.  The receptionist there asked me to give him my appointment letter but then asked me to come back to him closer to my interview time.  I went to him again at 10.45, he took my appointment letter and asked me to wait.  Just before 11 I was called.

The interview took around 15min.

- Asked for my passport and green card

- Took photo and fingerprints (both index fingers)
- Civics test

- Reading and Writing test

- Some "no" questions from the form which weren't properly reflected in the online fill-in form for some reason. (Were you a member of the Nazi party LOL)
- A few minutes on a long-ago 1-day arrest in a matrimonial dispute back in India (it was a fake case, no charges filed and was dismissed)
- Approved

No documents (tax, etc.) were asked for.

Unfortunately, while I was hoping for a same-day oath ceremony, the officer said the oath letter will come in the mail and might take up to 2 months.  He said same-day oath is rare and is randomly chosen by the machine in the morning.  I asked him if there was a way to get it scheduled today or sooner as I have to travel next month.  He expressed his inability.  But never mind.

He gave me a letter saying I had passed the civics and language tests and that my case was approved and that I should wait for the oath appointment letter in the mail.

I was out of the USCIS office at 11.20am.

I received notification of the online issuance of Oath ceremony letter today.  Oath is scheduled for March-9-2019 at Fairfax High School in Fairfax VA.

Guys...I would like to add our experience at Newark...Things just did not go as expected.

1. Our (me and my wife) appointment was for Feb 20, 2019 at 9:15am (June filing under 5 yr rule, GC 09/09/2013)

2. We reached there by 835am and saw a huge serpentine line almost flowing down to Broad St....So we went to the back of the building where line was comparatively shorter.

3. We had an impending snow storm which made the 35 mins wait a bit too hard. Specially I could see elderly people and kids in line too. I believe this building does much more than just regular interviews.

4. After clearing the security we took the elevators to 15th floor and were asked to show up to the window 1. we were there by 9:10 ( 5mins ahead of our scheduled appointment time). The lady was nice and took our appointment letter, picked up our file and she asked us to take a seat in the hall. The same things was done for guys ahead of us and behind us.

5. The hall was full to the brim...I mean really full and unlike no other federal building I have ever been to. There were people everywhere with confused and frustrated look and it was the first sign for us that something does not look good. Some also said that Monday being a holiday there was unprecedented rush which didn't make much sense as appointments are not made on federal holidays anyways.

6. We soon realized that almost half of the guys in the hall were waiting for their Oath ceremony. Others were waiting for their appointments from 830am...Second sign that things were behind schedule. the guys we spoke to also added that there seems to be some "system issue, recoding errors, certificate printing errors etc.)

7. After waiting until 1030am and no progress....the superintendent/supervisor lady came out and announced " we have a system issue and there is nothing can be done today....People who have their certificates and flag were asked to go for Oath, People who have submitted their appointment letters already (like us) will get a mail with new appointment date.. and finally, people who have given the interview but don't have the certificate should watch their mail & may also get a call about the next steps. I asked her if there was any indication of when we will need to come back and she mentioned that at the moment their center is 1 month full or something like that...

8. With this announcement as expected their was some confusion and chaos. The happy ones went for Oath, Frustrated ones i.e. who had their interview done but didn't get the certificate were upset and unclear...understandable so. Our category was fairly simple I assume...nothing happened apart from losing the appointment letter to the window lady...which we can always reprint online.

9. We took the elevators and moved out...but we noticed that people were still coming in.....so bet no one at security or other points were aware of what was happening upstairs.

So guys here is our story. We don't know what to do next. I am tempted to call USCIS helpline but I am thinking may be we should wait for a day or 2 to see if anything gets updated online. Life is back to normal in NJ after the snow storm so may be the guys at the building will update our records that.

I will be happy to share more details if anyone has any questions. Thank you all for your insights on this forum

Hi,

i had similar situation. My interview at Newark was on 12th Feb when the first snow storm impacted my appointment.

we had our interview at 1pm that day but got a call at 7:35 am from USCIS Newark office stating all appointments that day were cancelled.

what I did was contacted USCIS on 14th and spoke to L2 officer to understand what was the situation and got to know that nothing was pending on my case other than awaiting for a rescheduled date.

I did submit an inquiry in USCIS account requesting to see if we can do walkin. But haven’t heard anything till now.

I was told that I need to wait until they reschedule the interview and communicate

Good luck USCInd....Please update your status so I can take a cue. The advise on this forum is phenomenal. I was sitting clueless until I ended up here yesterday to see the vast amount of experiences everyone has been sharing

That sucks!!  I cannot imagine what you must be feeling after all this time, to have an end of the tunnel, and now you're in limbo.  :(  My hope is that they'll accommodate you in terms of getting your rescheduled quickly!  What a mess.  :(

Had my oath ceremony on 02/20 in Sacramento, along with 600 others. Ceremony was pretty jumbled (everything seemed disorganized and unprofessional) but hey, got the certificate which is all that matters! They had voter registration booths and even better a social security table set up afterwards where you could update your info so it saves a separate trip to the SSA. I went straight from the ceremony to the local post office to apply for my passport but even though they accept walk-ins from 10:30am-6:30pm each day, when I arrived at 2pm they turned me away, saying they were done taking applications for the day. Will have to take another day off work and try again later. Came home and weeded through 1300 pages of paperwork from the last 5 years, kept about 25 pages of documents like approval notices and put the rest in a bag to take with us when we go camping as we’re going to do a bonfire to burn it all! Best of luck to everybody who’s still riding this out. One day it’ll all be over!
