There is a big difference between planting a spy in a campaign, and having contacts in the campaign. Trump made the claim that they had placed a spy directly into his campaign. Last I checked (again unless something new has happened), the truth was they had contacts in the campaign that were giving them information. Both those contacts weren't FBI/DOJ appointed "moles", as was claimed.

I think it is simply semantics.  Based on what we were learning, the said informant was attempting to get inside the campaign starting with relatively low level functionaries, in many ways spreading misinformation to attempt to get in deeper.  It sounds much more like a directed operation, much like how a spy would operate.
