Perfect example of hypocrisy: Football players allowed to kneel on field, she's not allowed to tweet off the screen. Yes, yes, I know...they weren't being racist yadda yadda yadda save it you're missing the point. Her personal opinions are her personal opinions, we can agree or not agree but she wasn't shoving them down our throat on prime time. They can stay in the locker room and keep playing, she can keep tweeting and keep acting, what a bunch of snowflakes.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean there isn't public or private consequences to the speech said. Roseanne can and has been as nutty as she'd like for years, but there may be consequences to that speech - she may be fired, and she may find herself hurting friends and coworkers. Hollywood and tv-land has long held to the standards of their actors, it's often written into their contracts they agree to. No one has stopped her from tweeting, she's been back at it all night, considering she stated she would quit... I guess another personality disagreed with her original decision.

 

NFL players have the right to free speech and to protest if they wish. There may be rules enacted around that speech. So far the NFL has decided to do that. They may continue to protest and have their free speech within the locker-room - out of public eye (I'm sure cameras will follow them). It's kind of silly, but whatever. Some owners have decided that their players should be able to do it publically, and will pay any fines.

 

I'd also like to remind that... Roseanne, has not, nor ever has been remotely a 'liberal', nor has she ever been a 'conservative' either. She's way out there whack-a-do land. She's a mentally unstable individual and always has been. Perhaps conservatives and liberals should choose very carefully whom they try to co-opt.

If you can't see what she said (and there was a string of many things not just that) was racist, offensive, wrong, and plain ignorant then you aren't in the 'middle of the road' today.

I don't really care if it's a football player or an actor/actress, if they're liberal or conservative or just a nut. People have a right to their personal views, provided that they don't try to shove them down my throat. Tweeting in your personal account? your right and has to be kept completely separate from your job. I didn't see any of these tweets on her show so I'm ok. Likewise, kneeling in the locker room, their right as long as it's kept completely separate from their job. If I see them doing it on screen I'm not ok, they're shoving it down my throat.

Like I said, it's a new world now in the age of social media. Tweeting by a celebrity is seen as akin to shoving it down the throat of the public domain. It gets out, we all hear about it. We're talking about it right now. Free speech doesn't mean there isn't consequences.

 

For all the talk about disrespecting the anthem and the flag... my goodness, does no one remember what she did with that? The screaming, the smug smile, the spit, and the crotch grab? How offended everyone was? But back then, instead of just outrage, there were still consequences, she lost deals and projects, but nothing too major. Now people watch some men silently kneeling, and freak the heck out.

 

A lot of free speech is shoved down our throats though. By people you agree and disagree with. Wanting it to not be shoved down your throat could be seen by some as snowflake-like. Roseanne's behavior is more offensive to me than a person kneeling. But i'm not even demanding she be fired (though it's not surprising to me and its justified), i'm more concerned with the fact they gave her a platform to begin with and feign surprise.. that people have been making money off of her for years and know that she is completely unstable. Like many other celebrities, it usually ends up taking them to bad places.

1) No 1st Amendment issue -- government not trying to regulate speech. 

2) Probably there was a morality clause in her contract -- if you love free enterprise, you have to accept that people are free to negotiate contract terms, and that when those terms are breached, there are consequences.

Equating kneeling in a football game to tweeting racist garbage is just intellectually dishonest.
