NHS Pension

I have absolutely no idea about pensions and am probably quite naive when it comes to this kind of thing. I've done some googling and reading up on posts on here but I'm still none the wiser.

I've been working for the NHS for 6 years, so not an awfully long time. Before that I was in retail with no pension to my knowledge. I paid into my pension through the NHS for about 5 years so again, not long - what do I need to do about this before I move to the US? I'm 30 so I'm not toooooo concerned about it right now but I don't want get further down the line and realise I lost out on my UK pension (even though it won't be very much) because I didn't do A, B or C.

You have to put in a certain number of years to collect any pension. Five won't get you anything. It might help you boost your social security earning years in the US if you fall short to collect from either system. You can not collect full amount from both. Social security will reduce your monthly retirement payment by the amount (if any) you collect from U.K. I have 30 yrs NHS so can collect full U.K. retirement but not the full social security I would be entitled to if I do.  Think of both systems as a big fund, not your personal pot of money you get back. Meet the fund requirements and you get a payout.  Some die early and don't get anything. Some live to 97 and collect a bunch.
