I've just got my green card in but mail, but, my place of birth is according to USCIS officially UNKNOWN.

Amazingly, everything else is correct. Any advice? I called 1-800 number and am still not sure if I need to send it back or what to do???? They said to call port of entry and ask customs if that would be a problem when travelling, and if they say it's o.k. not to worry about it .

I really don't want to send green card back, as the 1-800 person said it can take months to get a new one. He had no clue exactly how long.

Thanks for any advice you can give on this.

My daughter and I are both from Canada with GC's and ours both say "Country of birth... Canada".... but I have read of other people (from other countries) that said "unknown".

I'm not sure what the reason is, but I would hold onto it and ask at a border crossing about what they would do if someone with a card such as yours tried to re-enter the U.S.

Here's a phone number you can call (it's a U.S. border crossing in Blaine, WA., right near the Canadian border): (360) 332-8511. I have spoken to the immigration department on a number of occasions and they are quite helpful about immigration issues.

Good luck.

This is just to clear up a question. . . were you born in any other country than Canada. I know your a Canadian citizen, but through birth? No, I've heard of ones being issued listing "USSR" as the country, which no longer exists.

Odd "unknown", though. I know on some of my docs they've listed my country of birth as "Scotland", "United Kingdom", and in one instance "UK (Scotland)".

Hey, wait a minute :) Mine says "USSR". That's where I was born - when I was born, USSR was around. Had I been born after 1991, and my green card said "USSR" for my place of birth, that would have been wrong.

But if the place of birth is "Unknown", when it is actually known, I would want to correct that. I know it's not as crucial as a misspelled name, but it's still a USCIS error.

Thanks everyone. What is interesting is that on EAD card the place of birth is correct. I think someone just messed up the green card. Do you think I should make an infopass appointment and at least get my passport stamped before sending the card back and requesting the correction? I just don't like the idea that I have to send it back and not have a proof of status in the meantime.

Thanks

That is the best idea I can think of. THis way you shouldn't really have any probs with crossing the border for a visit back home.

The same thing happened to my husband. His EAD card was correct, but his green card had UNKNOWN (he's from the UK). We sent it back, made an infopass and got the stamp in the passport, and a few weeks later recieved the corrected green card.

Thanks for the number. I searched online and this is the only number that gives me the answer I needed to know! My girlfriend also had an issue of "Unknown" in her Country of Birth. I believe it could be a mistake by the issuing official. She filed the application online and enter "China" for her country of birth, but I guess according to them it should be entered as "People's Republic of China" or something.

I called the border crossing at Blaine, WA. He said when entering US from Canada, they do not care about the "Unknown" in Country of Birth on your greencard as long as you have the supporting documents of where you came from (e.g. China passport). He wasn't sure about entering to Canada.

We'll give it a shot this weekend, hopefully we won't encounter any issues.

Just got back from Vancouver, BC. Everything went smoothly and no questions about "Unknown" on greencard were asked. The security coming back to US is lot stricter than heading into Canada. However, we did slip some cooked meat across the border, yup!
