Get sick whenever you visit?

Seems like a fun (not fun) off-topic thread to me!

I'm visiting my awesome partner right now.  Third visit this year and third time I've gotten sick either directly before or upon arrival.

I figure stress and extra work (to both pay for the trip and to allow for time off work) contribute to being run down, then spending 24 hours in various filthy planes and airports does the rest.

Anyone else find this, or am I a random anomaly?

Meanwhile it's 5am and I've been on the couch the last 2 hours before I don't wan't to wake him with the barking noise coming from my throat every 5 minutes.

You're changing environments. It's normal.

After living for a while in one place, your body will get used to the air, pollen and all local bacteria. And you won't be getting sick more.

As @Roel has said this is actually pretty common when traveling to different regions. This is because your body is not adjusted to that environment and needs time to adjust.

Not doubting it, I just find it's strange. I've never gotten sick when traveling for tourism, only when I'm over here visiting my partner.

On the good side, finally starting to feel better now, hopefully will be totally over this in time for our roadtrip South this weekend :)

I tend to get sick every time I travel abroad. It comes on some time after the heavy jet lag and airsickness. It also used to happen every time my husband came to visit me. We joked I was allergic to him. Same thing happens to my family too. Our bestman told us that someone on the plane was coughing all over people... sure enough, within a few days he was sick... and it spread to the entire wedding party. Yes, I was ill on my wedding day! At least it was memorable... ;)

Timeline

I think it's pretty normal. I live in South Carolina (very humid and hot area) and my husband is from Sweden (cold, non-humid area). Every time he's visited, he's gotten a bad case of allergies or some kind of common cold. Ironically, now that he lives here, he hasn't had any serious issues... *knock on wood*. Hopefully he's just finally adjusted, which will eventually happen when you stay somewhere long enough and allow your body to sort of calibrate with its surroundings.

I also got sick after coming back home from Sweden earlier this year. It was snowy and freezing the entire time I was there, and I came home to the familiar humidity and high temps. My allergies and sinuses were under full attack less than 24 hours after landing. It eventually passes once you reacclimatize. Even if the temperature/climate doesn't seem to be a drastic change, every region has its own allergens, etc., that can differ from another region. For instance - our pollen is OFF THE CHARTS here, but pollen isn't something my husband ever really encountered before in Sweden.

Håll ut, y'all.

Everytime my husband flies on a plane he gets sick.  Imho it's the close quarters and recycled air plus stress of travel.  Boost your immune system before going, try not to stress, and take it easy the first couple days.
