Selective Service Requirement- may have failed to register

Hi guys,

My husband (who is now 27 years old) was first granted his permanent residency CR-1 visa in June 2015 when he was 24 years old.  I have a strong memory of one of the forms he filled out saying that since he was a male 18-26 years old, signing that form registered him for the Selective Service.  So, because of that, we didn't do anything else to register him for the Selective Service.

 

Now we are very excitedly about to apply for his citizenship next week, and are required to provide proof that he registered for the Selective Service.  I already went to the Selective Service website and searched, and his name didn't come up.

 

Any advice on this?  I know we can't apply for his citizenship without this info, and I want to make it clear that (if he is in fact not registered, though I truly believe he is), we did not intentionally not register him.

Pretty sure the form that says to be aware that he needs to register. Registration is a separate thing. 

 

Intentionally or not, it's your fault for not making sure the registration was done  

 

"Applicants for U.S. citizenship under the age of 26 should expect to have Form N-400 denied if they choose not to register for Selective Service. By making the decision not to register, the applicant is willfully failing to meet this obligation, and the USCIS officer will be forced to deny the N-400 application based on the applicant’s moral character."

Call them . See if he registered him automatically. My oldest was registered automatically. It does happen from time to time so check it out to be sure.

Call them is the next thing.

I just remembered 

 We don't find the boys online because when USCIS registers them they don't use the SSN but the person on the phone can find them in the system. 

 

If you didn't call them, try that. If not he will be waiting longer.

He was probably automatically registered by either DoS or USCIS when he became a permanent resident. 

 

Call them on Tuesday (they are closed Monday for Memorial Day) at 1-888-655-1825. They have access to more information on their systems than you do when your search your name on their site. 

 

Worst case scenario and he wasn't registered, he would likely have to wait until he turns either 29 (if applying for naturalisation after three years of marriage to you), or 31 (if applying after being an LPR for five years).

Didn't know you could even check that. I did a search to find myself and came right up, so I would think the online system works pretty well. Posted below with some editing for my protection.... I believe I did it at my high school when I turned 18.

Neither did I until my oldest 2 months before his 18th birthday got he card in the mail. Seems USCIS does from time to time sends them in. I'm not the only one on here with a child/spouse or whatever registered by USCIS.

Do you have a copy of that form? If so, and USCIS did not register him after he signed it, it might help to produce it as proof why you took no further steps. Nevertheless, you ought to have checked/confirmed the registration since it is one of the major requirements down the road.

When my husband applied in 2012 the initial search did not show that he registered. He did not remember anything as he lived in US since he was 15 years old. When we called they were able to confirm he registered at 19 and corrected his record so I could see it online. Also, I have received a letter confirming his registration in a mail. I believe when someone enters US and is within required age they will be automatically registered.

Thank you all SO much for your feedback and advice.

 

I knew he had registered but I just couldn't remember how or where.  It turns out he registered with the DMV, but since he didn't have a social security number yet when he first got here, it couldn't be found online.  I called selective service, they found his registration right away, and added his SSN to the system.  Whew!
