Bar runs 'Reparations Happy Hour' and asks white people to donate money before handing $10 bills to black, brown and indigenous patrons

According to event organizers, $10 cash would be given out to attendees as 'reparations,' paid for in part by the donations of white people who were specifically not invited to attend the happy hour. 

'White people can show up and support by GIVING reparations. Instead of physically attending, your presence will be felt through your active financial support for healing, leadership, and community building within Portland’s black, brown, and indigenous community,' the event's listing stated.  

Local activist Cameron Whitten, 27, of Portland, Oregon, is the brains behind the 'Reparations Happy Hour' 

'It was only $10, but when I saw them I saw their eyes light up,' Whitten told the New York Times. 'What I saw there was that people felt like they were finally seen.'

Forty people attended the happy hour, which was thrown by local activist group, Brown Hope, according to The Oregonian.

Whitten also tapped seven white people to help defend the event against any potential interference from alt-right groups in the area. 

The desire to limit the happy hour's attendees to people of black, brown and indigenous descent was based on the notion of creating an 'intentional' and safe space for them.

i think this is a great idea, as long as i get a receipt showing i've paid my reparations.

i'd then laminate that receipt.  then when anyone starts up about white privilege, i can show i've paid and demand to see their payment slip.........

Agree with your sentiment.  However, I never took anything from anyone I wasn’t already entitled to, and I never owned a slave so I don’t really feel the need to pay anyone anything, except respect.

I was born here so doesn't that make me by definition indigenous? Where is my $10? By the way I don't owe anyone reparations because I never owned slaves and virtually no one alive in the US today is owed reparations because slavery was ended long before any of us were born. Also what makes people think slavery was exclusive to African Americans? There were plenty of slaves and indentured servants of all races including Caucasian.

I have descendants that came here in the 1600's as a indentured servant which pretty much was a slave at that point in time. But the majority of my descendants have been poor farmers that have never owned slaves at all. So why should I be guilt ridden for something that happened over 150 years ago?
