I-131 approved but won't arrive on time

Hi everyone, 

I received my EAD at the beginning of the year. I filed for a I-131, Travel document a while ago an. Yesterday, my case was updated and according to the uscis Hotline approved. According to the service employee, the physical approval letter was sent out yesterday as well. 

 

My problem is my flight to London leaves tomorrow and I'm afraid that I won't get the physical letter on time. Do you think I can leave without the physical letter and have my wife forward it to me?

I wouldn't leave without it. Try to get an infopass appointment this afternoon/walk-in...

Leaving the US without your proper documentation in hand basically invalidates the entire process. You will be unable to return. Do not attempt this. No trip home is worth losing everything.

Don't leave without proper documents. Change your flight if you have to. 

 

The golden rule of immigration is to never make purchases or plans until visa (or documents) are in your hands.

I don't agree with this as a definitive statement, since it was approved already as opposed to people who leave the US before it is approved and abandon their application, but yes in this case it carries some risk and I wouldn't do it. What if the USCIS messed up and hasn't actually approved it yet? What if it gets lost in transit to your wife or to you in London? Risk far outweighs reward here. Reschedule your trip.

Never make plans you aren't willing to change or cancel until you have the document in hand.

 

Personally, I'd wait for it to arrive to be safe.

Technically, under the letter of the INA, one must only be approved for AP and use AP to re-enter the US as a parolee. They do not need to be in physical possession of any document upon exit (just have it approved).

But again, it's not something I would prefer to deal with after coming so far along in the process.

EAD usually comes with AP,  it is a combo card.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

Even if the online or misinformation line says it was approved. If you leave before they actually make the card and actually send it out. Then you will be out of luck because the date you left will be before the printed date on the card/system.

Well you have to file for it at the same time and OP didn't

I put it between B&C. Same conclusion though.
