SSN question...

Tried to apply for an SSN this afternoon, but didn't have much luck. I arrived a week ago on Saturday, so was half expecting that I wouldn't be able to get one yet, but I thought the (possible) problem would be that I might not be showing up 'on the system' yet as I haven't been here that long. I mentioned to the woman at the SSA office that I've only been here a week and so thought the details might not have updated yet, but she said (after looking at something on her screen) 'no, it did'... I took this to mean that my details were all in there as they should be... but then after she'd typed in all the info from my application form, she announced 'not verified!' and told me I'll have to wait 6 weeks to get a social security number. I just said that I'd come back another day and hope that it works then.... but just wanted to double check that this problem (not being verified) should be fixed if I go back in a few days/next week/whenever? I ask this because, when I said to the woman at the office that I'd try again in a few days, she said 'it won't make any difference'....

Sorry for the ramble, just wanted to establish that this 'not verified' thing is just what happens if you try to apply too soon, and not some other problem I might have run into!

2005 - We met

2006 - Filed I-129F

2007 - K-1 issued, moved to US, completed AOS (a busy year, immigration-wise)

2009 - Conditions lifted

2010 - Will be naturalising. Buh-bye, USCIS! smile.png

She should have done a manual verification. Go back when you have been here for 2 weeks.

I went 2 weeks after I arrived and they had to do a manual verification for me. It only took a couple of weeks though and then my Social Security card arrived. Dont stress too much I had both my SS card and Green Card within a month of arriving.

You need to give USCIS at least 2 weeks for them to update their SAVE system, for the SSA office to verify the K-1.

We waited about 1 month, and applied for the SSN in married name after marriage.

OUR TIME LINE Please do a timeline it helps us all, thanks.

Is now a US Citizen immigration completed Jan 12, 2012.

Aha... thanks. I knew the system had to be updated (and had read and printed out all the pages and info linked to on here) but just got a bit confused when I was told that I was 'on the system' but then still came back as 'not verified' - I didn't know if the 'not verified' thing was due to me not having waited long enough or some other problem entirely, especially when the SSA woman told me that it wouldn't make any difference how long I wait before coming back, it'll still take 6 weeks to get my social security card!

Thanks, both! :)

Yeah, if was you I'd go back in a couple of weeks and sort it out then. It should all be ready to go by then and they shouldn't have any problems issuing you with a card.

Mine wasn't in the system when I applied (even though it was over two weeks since I entered the USA) and it took over 6 weeks to arrive. They had to ask for verification through USCIS, it had to then come back to the SSA and then they had to issue the card. It all seemed a bit time consuming but I did get it in the end!

6 weeks could happen or longer, but not 100 percent that it's going to take that long. One thing is if you haven't been here 10 days, they are supposed to try to verify your status again before going to the next step. The next procedure step now is a secondary electronic verification request. If that comes back after allowing 30 days as verified as work authorized you get your SSN. If that also does not verify your status the application will be denied. However, in some cases the secondary response is to send immigration copies of your documents along with a form G-845 and that can take another 30 days or longer.

You need to go back to the office if you had been here less than 10 days when they first checked and ask them to try again. If that's a no go make sure the secondary request was sent and go back once a week to see if they have receive a response. Make sure you always to your documents. If the G-845 is sent give it two weeks and start going in once a week to see if it came back.

I wasn't in the system when I applied, but the Social Security office took my application and mailed me a notice when they started to process my card. Did they take your application? Did they give you a letter stating that you had applied and needed that they needed to verify your information with USCIS first? That's what they did with me. They'd warned me it may take 4 weeks, but it actually only took a week to verify. Some people are just unlucky and need to wait a bit longer.
