so, we (my mother and i) arrived yesterday in montreal after a very comfortable VIA train ride from Windsor to Montreal. we checked into the holiday inn "midtown" location upon our arrival. i would not recommend this hotel btw. for it's price, it's a bit too 'old' and dodgy.

ok, so this morning, me and my clear file folder, huge mail envelope, and my giant brown envelope (xray) made our way to the US consulate for 8:00 AM. there were already people there making their way thru security (which was a breeze as i took nothing w/ me except for the essentials). the security guard gave me a little plasticized paper with a letter and number on it (which i never ended up needing and accidentally took with me .. oh well .. a souvenir i suppose .. hehe). security told me to go downstairs and wait with everyone else. i went downstairs and sat in a chair in front of the elevators for about 15 minutes.

at 8:15, they allowed us in the elevator and up we went to the famous floor 19. we were told to ALL go to cashier no. 13. when my turn came up, cashier 13 (after noticing my big xray envelope) told to go to cashier 14. this cashier did not take my money but did give me two identical printed out 'tickets' with a letter and number on each of them. she told me to go and wait in the "immigration section" of the waiting room and watch for my number to appear on the screen.

in about 10 minutes, my number appeared and i was off to one of the windows. the very nice lady asked me for the following:

-my letter from the consulate (informing me of my appn't)

-my passport

-two passport photos

-my letter from my fiance stating that he still wants to marry me.

-my long birth certificate AND the photo copy of it.

-my police clearance

-my I-134 affidavit of support

-my DS-156 and DS-156K

-my medical envelope

she then gave me a paper and told me to go back to the casher to pay and to come right back. i did. she then told me to go and sit back in the immigration part of the waiting room and wait again for my letter and number to appear on the screen.

at least 30-40 minutes later after watching the screen and listening to it 'buzz' every time a new letter/number appeared, mine finally appeared. i went into the correct room (indicated on the screen) and had my "interview". it went very well. the guy at my interview brought up our wedding date (and how it was on May 19th). An aside .. ... we had really made an effort to expedite our appn't because of our wedding date with emails and phone calls to the consulate .. in sheer desperation .. ). He also casually asked me about my FI and where he was at the time. He asked me when I last spoke with him ...I said "last night" .. and he said "and what did he say about today" .. and I told him that he said to just "relax and be myself". He then asked me some details about the wedding location .. so I chatted about that for awhile. He also asked what our plans were after we got married. We also discussed the AOS process for a bit. The guy I had was really nice ... he even said he'd put a rush on the delivery of my visa as we had scheduled our moving truck for next Monday. So .. I should hopefully have my visa in hand by the end of the week. whew.

so that's it folks. very simple process ... nothing to worry about at all. so long as you have all your paperwork in order, you should be fine. the weather here in Montreal is beautiful. my mom and I are off to check out old Montreal in about an hour. i think i'll leave my xray at the hotel though .. i'm sick of carrying it around for no reason. haha.

thank you all for the great advice and best wishes !! the K1 process is soon over .. but then comes the AOS, EAD, etc ... more visajourney fun :) what would we do w/o this site.

chat w/ you all again!

Congrats!!! Don;'t forget about EI if you qualify for it!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Yes do a search!! Quiting a job in canada to move to be with ur spouse is acceptable!! There is a EI sticky at the top of this forum, plus do a search more EI info as well (or just scrol down the this section) Of course one has to have worked enough weeks in Canada, etc, etc, just like one would have to, to claim it in Canada. I was a Cr-1 case, so was rather straighrt forward when it came to collecting EI, a bit more tricky I belive for a K1, but do a search, and I'm sure other K1'ers will assist. Cheers
