1 Year ban for admitting drug use is up what to do next?

Hello everyone, my husband went to his visa interview on 7/7/17 in CDJ, and was banned for a year for admitting to using controlled substance. His I-601a was also revoked so now we have to get a I-601 approved. The paper work he was handed at this interview says to return on June 1, 2018. We already have his medical appointment set up but we are not sure what happens next. Anyone who has gone through a similar situation and can provide any information id appreciate it-Thanks

My attorney is under the impression that we must wait to undergo medical exam until waiver is approved. Do you knw if this is correct?

The validity of the visa is tied to the validity of the medical exam. The risk is that the medical exam will expire before the waiver is approved and visa issued, so a new medical would be needed. Generally you would wait until the waiver is approved and then do a medical...less risk of paying for an unnecessary medical on 2 counts (if waiver is denied and/or takes over 6 months,...which is likely).
