So true. I'm a pretty decent saver but I'd be bankrupt by the end of the year even with the no-insurance, cash payments if it wasn't for my plan's coverage.

best wishes with your wife's procedure! Hopefully the financial dent isn't too bad...I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Thank you, she is really worried (and rightfully so)...but the outcome can be a complete cure.

You got this wrong.

There is a federal law that makes having health insurance mandatory - the ACA (aka Obamacare).

The US Supreme Court ruled in favor of Obamacare.  Chief Justice Roberts wrote the opinion.

Trump has already done away with the penalty for not having healthcare insurance.

Obamacare is still good law.  Now, there is just no penalty for not having insurance.

Obama care is still a good law?  this makes zero sense.

How nazistic it is to force your citizens to buy PRIVATE health insurance?

You are correct. I know many family members who have got medical services South of our boarder without any problems...but I think they overlooked the fact that she doesn't even have her green card yet, they may not let her back over the border, but kinda doubtful (where would she go?).

They certainly wouldn't let her back into the US without an EAD or green card... and even then.. the stories you hear can be horrific. I think I'd rather be abstinent until I knew I had insurance + a good doctor for BC than ever risk my new life in the US. :D Birth control isn't worth risking that.

Again, health insurance is not mandatory. The Affordable Care Act does not make having health insurance mandatory. You either have insurance or you don't. If you don't, you pay the IRP (which is far cheaper than monthly premiums these days) or you prove that you may be exempted from the IRP. Individual mandate is not, nor ever was truly mandatory. It's the reason why millions still choose to not buy insurance. There's no incentive for a lot of people not to, and the rest are priced out by the cost and take the risk. Having mandatory health insurance is considered by the court, unconstitutional in a variety of ways. This is why there was left a 'choice' and the IRP was considered by the Justice under the terms of a 'tax' instead of a 'fine'. A fine would give someone a false choice, and there was a great debate about that in the court at the time. When something is mandatory you do not choose something, and there is a risk of breaking a law or jail time. There are no options available. The penalty, is simply considered a 'tax' rather than a true fine or punishment. Kind of like how some people pay more tax and some pay less depending on circumstances and credits. And now since there will no longer be a penalty, there's really nothing of the sort to even make it remotely being similar to mandatory.

Having car insurance, for instance, is mandatory. Made possible by the states, and under states rights. However, if enacted federally it would be unlikely to be a successful policy that would past the test as they do not have plenary powers. States could also make health insurance mandatory, but did not elect to do that.

It's debatable how good the ACA still is. It's in the process of being undercut and not well-cared for by the administration. There are many good aspects that most like. But for many Americans it has done nothing to make the cost of care any more affordable. It is not truly free or affordable in the way Europeans will understand how their care works. For some of course, it has helped... and it has provided greater access, which is always a good thing. K1s can routinely get themselves into trouble about obtaining insurance, because the system is not easy to navigate. Let us hope her new spouse has insurance and is willing to add her.

I will only have one pack of birth control on me when I move to the US next month. What are my options as far as continuing to stay on BC?

My doctor here in Canada has given me refills for a year, but I only get about 3 packs at a time. My mom has offered to get my prescription from the pharmacy and then get them to me when she comes to visit. Is this illegal/not the right way to go about it?

I really have no idea what to do.

When I moved to US, I brought like 7 boxes of BC. I brought the prescription from my doctor in Mexico. Then when my mom visited, she brought me more.

Just a possible astronomically high medical bill if you don't, I'm not one to gamble on not having insurance...but go ahead and play that game. You do realize that health care in the US is probable the highest of most nations.

Lets just make a scenario....she doesn't have the money to buy the birth control...and oh on..your pregnent! Lets see what that costs....my wife just had our first baby via C-section...the bill was around $87,000! My out of pocket= around $250. Insurance is a must.

Talked to the fiancé, it doesn’t look like he’s on a plan right now, but once he’s done school in February and begins a job in his field, getting us on a coverage plan is one of the first things he’ll do. We have the money for birth control, that’s not a big deal. I guess I was more looking for a breakdown of my options, and how it works there, which you gave me.

Thanks again!

No problem, and that does make it more clear when you tell the whole story with your husband. IUD is probable not a good option because it's expensive, just get the pills via mother, enough for awhile. :)

Yeah, I considered the IUD here a few months ago, when I was still on my father’s benefits and wouldn’t have to pay anything, but decided against it. I know all of the benefits of it, and after talking with my doctor we just decided on the pill, IUD just wasn’t for me.

I’m going to check out my pharmacy and explain my situation, and pay to have as many boxes as they can give me before I go, so it’s at least not something I have to worry about right when I first get there.

Thanks everyone for all the insight!

Bingo..I think she got her answer. (I agree, you have to have insurance while in the US, in fact...it's mandatory).

They removed the mandatory insurance requirement in the last tax bill they passed. December 2017 I believe.

It's about the same here. I get a year refill from my OBGYN at my yearly check up however I can only get one per month. I believe that's just my insurance though. Once you get insurance make an appointment with a OBGYN or a regular family doctor could do it OR try your local health departments. You may get them for free through health department with planned parenthood.

Oh lord... I have a prescription for birth control in the USA and it's free with my health insurance.  I have yet to pay for birth control in the USA.

Same here.

Highly likely same pill is available here, possibly under a different brand name. There’s only so many chemical combinations to use....

Insurance also covers more than pregnancy, because if cost and birth control were the only factors, then abortion would be cheaper than insurance.

I didn't realize BC pills were so expensive in US. In Australia, I got 4 months supply and only paying  AUD $14...... Maybe I should go and see a doctor now and get some refill.

It's not just birth control pills, it's all prescription medications. And if you ever need to go to the ER, they will charge you insane prices even for band-aids. That's why there are so many pharmacies in Mexico catering to Americans.
