Starbucks is now allowing people to use its restrooms and sit in its cafes and patios even if they do not buy anything.

The coffee giant on Saturday announced its new policy, which says that customers, including those who did not make a purchase, can come to its cafes and stay — as long as they behave properly.

Under the new companywide policy, people who come to Starbucks locations without buying anything are considered customers and can stay. If someone becomes a safety threat, Starbucks employees should call 911. Depending on the circumstances, a disruptive customer can also be banned from Starbucks stores.

“We are committed to creating a culture of warmth and belonging where everyone is welcome. . . .  We want our stores to be the third place, a warm and welcoming environment where customers can gather and connect,” the company said in a statement, referring Starbucks’ claim to fame as a “third place between work and home” where people can spend their time.

More abject liberal madness. Can't wait to see how this works out for them

May be of help to the Libraries downtown, they have had major issues and perhaps the 'clientele' will switch especially as they offer longer hours.

I went into a Fred Meyer grocery store restroom once back when I was living in WA and there was a homeless guy standing in front of a sink with his shirt off shaving his face. It looked like be had just bought a pack of disposable razors and a can of shaving cream and man was he making a huge mess. There was whiskers and shaving cream all over the sink and floor. I hope to see the same type of stuff at a Starbucks soon.

Most Starbucks are crowded inside near me, with people nursing a single cup of coffee for an entire day. This is only going to make things worse.

Why, they can just save some money on overpriced coffee.

I reckon the homeless population will be happy to have somewhere warm/cool and dry to hang out.

Not so sure that's going to do Starbucks bottom line much good though

Everything crossed for a smooth and stress free journey

This was a horrible business decision by the CEO.  This will simply result in shutting down of "select" Starbucks stores as well as higher prices........

Note:  "Select stores" = stores which see a steep decline in ARPC (Average Revenue Per Customer).

It will give the independent a chance, that could be a beneficial side effect.

Exactly!!  When I told my wife about this decision, she immediately said "We should open a coffee shop".....

Perhaps Starbucks and Local Governments could team up where there is a need, operate on a 24/7 basis for example.

On my short list, just in my general area, King Soopers, Safeway, Target, Walmart, Office Max, Whole Foods, Burger King, Lowe's, Wendy's, Home Depot and Pet Smart don't ask if you are a customer when you use the restroom. I'm sure there are a lot more than that. I'm not sure adding Starbucks to the list changes anything.

Maybe it's just me, but personally I'd rather have people using restrooms than crapping on the street.
