I thought the same would happen to me - no need to eat bread if it's going to be crappy, no desire for crappy US sweets. Also, drinking a lot less beer. However, I rediscovered my lust for a good burger and burritoes bigger than my head. Swings and roundabouts.

I was a baker for a few years so I know how to make my own.

The only complaint I have about American food is there seems to be sugar in everything (or sweetners).

Regarding weight, I was a lean 150 lbs or so before I met my wife, at 6 foot tall i was a bit of a beanpole, after meeting her and eating properly i piled on weight, and after visiting america (consuming around 6000 calories a day) I'm sitting at 205lbs, I'd love to say of lean muscle but its a mix :P I definately prefer the food over there, but its so easy to not realise exactly what your eating (in terms of nutrition).

I was like you (I've only been here about 4 1/2 months or so) and thought I wouldn't really miss anything.

I am now missing food I have never even LIKED before. Like brown sauce, hated it in the UK, want to get my greedy little hands on some now!

I don't really miss food about the UK - sometimes I think I'd like to have a farmhouse loaf or a good sausage, but it's probably best these things are not readily available to me. I am spoiled for shops selling UK foodstuffs, but these are usually things I avoid like the plague such as marmite and salad cream.

I do miss easily available quality cheddar and Neal's Yard Cheese shop. That I miss the most.

I miss granary bread

Thinking with all honesty, the only thing I REALLY do miss, I mean REALLY miss from the UK is bread. I searched high and low for an equivalent and really could only come up with specialist deli bread. So....(as I've mentioned before) I bought a breadmaking machine. That way I can choose the flour I use (wholewheat, white etc) and I also know what goes into it aswell. It isn't quite the same as a loaf from Greggs, but is pretty good nonetheless.

This way you can make sure no HFCS is in it, no excessive sugar or salt (although some salt is needed for the yeast to work) and no nasty preservatives etc etc.

I recommend it to anyone who feels they miss a good loaf of bread. It can also be used to make cakes, pizza base dough, jams etc etc.

I have got a bread machine and I DO love it. I have tried to explain to my husband about crusty bread and stuff and he doesn't quite understand and says "well you want stale bread I can just leave the bag open..." no no no. Also, why is it so tiny here? I don't understand.

ANYWAYS! Exciting news, went to my nearest Wegmans today (an hour away but happen to be passing by  ) and LOVED the british section! Not the price though, lol. Some of the brands in the british section was strange but I got some custard powder, salad cream, brown sauce, knorr chicken tonight, NAAN BREAD! and some other little things and didn't let my husband see the end total

hehehe I know just how you feel. I felt so naughty when I walked out of Wegmans with only a handful of things and a nasty bill! Good job I have to go over a mountain to get there or it may become a habbit!

I dunno if anyone has tried it, but we have a few tiny amish shops around my area where you can get fresh bread very cheap daily - I've never tried it, but it may be an alternative to making your own. I only buy weight watchers and liter 35 bread for myself :P So I'm not too bothered with how bread tastes (obviously lol)

My neighbour and I have both decided to buy bread machines and bake our own. She's American and hates the bread here. I'm so excited!

Anyone know if any stores here sell Suet? I know some of the mail order places do. I was explaining to my neighbour that dumplings aren't bisquick biscuits dropped in chicken, they're gooey n yummy. I've leant her my M&S British Foods cookery book (recommended) so she can see how the real ones are made. She called last night and asked what suet was and I had to tell her it's the stuff that holds bird seed together!

I'm going to have to venture out to Wegman's and see what they have now.

10 year Green Card received, Next step is citizenship urgh!

Some of the brands in the british section was strange

The British section at the Shaw's near my parents' house has stuff I have never seen before, and was totally flummoxed as to what this stuff was and where it came from. Turns out the mystery brands were Irish, but instead of having an Irish section they put it with the British.

Methinks Shaw's doesn't know their British and Irish history and what a hooha this might cause if we just lumped the two together -- "oh, they're next to each other on a map, close enough"! But then of course, this is the week I saw a picture of the Rev Ian Paisley and Martin McGuinness sharing a chuckle, so maybe we can have a power-sharing agreement in the aisles of Shaw's too.

Gosh, I'm being silly tonight!
