Given their history, US and Cuban relationship has been a strained one. US doesn't appreciate their dollars going into Cuban military pockets. Also, holding grudges is a part of politics. This is why travel to Cuba can be "iffy".

The US has a strained relationship with many countries. I haven't heard of the US banning its citizens from going to Russia or North Korea on vacation.

You must not know much history between all these countries and Cuba.

Cuba is different because when the Spanish-American war ended, Spain (who was in control of Cuba at that time) signed over its territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, and Cuba) to the US (so it is actually a US territory, Russia and NK is not). Then, the Cuban Revolution happened and came Castro who overthrew the government. He seized a lot of private companies and land including many belonging to US corporations and taxed US products heavily and so on and so forth.

Just a brief summary, but lots happened and so the grudge continues with Cuba.

So what? Why should regular American citizens not go on vacation there?

I've been to Cuba but that was before I immigrated to the US.  Short of one being born here (they can't remove you in this case but the US government can make things difficult for you), I think you might be putting your future in America in grave jeopardy if you go.  It is one  thing if you have not submitted paperwork to the US government  of your intention to live here, it is another if you already have.

Don't do it.

Problem isn’t traveling there but spending money.

Anyways one of the few spots a US resident can’t go without the permit.

How so?

What is your reason for travelling to Cuba? As a US person, you cannot travel to Cuba as a tourist. There are broad exceptions though.

You may not agree with the ban but it does exist.

One of those weird American things, I never visited Cuba but know a lot of people who did, holiday or business.

Since I have been here I know quite a few Muricans who have, seem to remember you had to do the 'Cultural' thing or enter through Mexico.

Yeah also a weird touch down alternate spot then take off again to hit Cuba. No passport stamp by Cubans to avoid US issues.

I’d love to go there but other than being stuck in the 1950s it’s like most every other island in the Caribbean.

I'm not a lawmaker, so your attitude is misplaced.

Cyclone27 gave a good link, so I'll post it for you again. http://www.visitcuba.com/travel-guide/travel-tips/special-note-to-usa-travellers/

From basic understanding, its mostly about the US money being spent there that is what the gov't doesn't want.

It's simple, you live in a country, you follow their rules.

But it's OK for a US citizen to spend their money in North Korea?

I get it, it's a rule, but it's a stupid one. I hope you can agree with that
