Name Change help!!

I got married to my American wife and she went to SSA to change her last name on her social security card last week and we have not received her new card yet. (it takes about 2 weeks) 

 

I'm filling my i-485 form to apply for the green card but I'm not sure what name should I put under my spouse legal name on page 7 since SSA was the only place she went to change her last name to mine. and what name should she use on her i 864 (Affidavit support)? while other supporting docs have her last name before marriage on them.

Use the name you want listed on the green card. List her maiden name as other names used, where listed.

Her married name is her current name...the marriage certificate is a legal name change document (with limits...first names and such can't be changed that way). Changing it with the SSA is something you need to do as evidence of the change for various purposes, but is not the actual legal name change itself.

Edit: Whoops...I thought the foreign national was doing the name change. It's the USC doing the name change. So ignore the thing about the green card name. Still use her married name anywhere listed, though. That is her current name.

Thank you geowrian.  Actually I'm a husband applying for a permanent resident so my last name will remain the same. When they ask about my spouse's name, there is no place to write other names she has used before. do you mean that a marriage certificate is a legal name change doc even on our marriage certificate show her last name that belongs to her since birth?

Thanks. I got that when I re-read the post, and edited my post accordingly.

Yes, the marriage certificate lets you change your name in a couple different ways (varies by state, but usually hyphenations, replacement of the last name, etc.) even if the new name isn't actually listed on the marriage certificate.
