Hamas official: 50 of those killed on border Monday were our people

For probably the trillionth time the truth comes out. Israel doesn't deliberately target civilians...yet all those out there with short memories will put us at exactly the same spot for the trillionth and one time next time.

 

Senior Hamas official Salah Bardawil told Palestinian media Wednesday that 50 of the Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip border riots Monday belonged to the terror group's ranks. He spoke in an interview to Baladna TV, a private Palestinian news outlet.
 

Sixty-one people were killed in Monday's riots, with more than 1,200 wounded. While calm was achieved—purportedly with Egyptian mediation—thereafter, Hamas fired on an IDF force Wednesday, prompting the army to retaliate with tank fire at a Hamas outpost in the northern strip.

A rioter who was captured by IDF soldiers after breaching the border fence and infiltrating into Israel on Tuesday said Hamas orchestrated the border demonstrations to stay in power.
 

"Hamas organized the demonstrations so that people would not 'turn' on them," he affirmed, explaining that the humanitarian situation in the strip has gotten so bad that Hamas planned out the March of Return protests to let people blow off steam, and did so in a way that would help their cause.

Their plan, as well as their propaganda, he said, worked.
 

"Hamas controls everything in the strip. Hamas sends us messages to our Facebook accounts and to our cellphones. They come to mosques handing leaflet saying to go to the fence. When there's electricity, and televisions can be turned on all you can see is the march. People got worn down and bored, and I'm one of those people," he said.
 

The detainee also seemed to back Israel's assertion that Hamas uses women and children as human shields in the protests.
 

"They tell women to go forward. They say to the woman: Go ahead, you are a woman, and the Israeli army does not shoot at women. They tell small children: Go ahead, the army does not shoot at small children. They tell a child to go ahead and he goes, it's a little boy. They deceive him," he laments.
 

While the IDF has indeed explicitly instructed not to fire at women or children, it has urged them to refrain from coming near the fence, saying they are putting themselves in harm's way by doing so.
 

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stressed that sometimes harming civilians is inevitable.
 

"They're (Hamas) pushing civilians, women, children into the line of fire with the hope of creating casualties," he explained. "We try to minimize casualties. They're trying to incur casualties in order to put pressure on Israel, which is horrible."

Sometimes they will, sometimes they don't, I'm not really sure what they base it on. I'm also a bit confused by the fact that even the IDF says the figure is around 30 people, not 50, but then again they might not automatically know about everyone who is a Hamas member right away. Either way it's the same conclusion: about half, or more, were engaging in acts of terror, and the other half were either engaging in other violent activities(attempts to breach the fence, throwing molotov cocktails, etc) or got in harms way when others were doing one of the two. World gets up in arms, then realizes oh maybe they weren't shooting at innocent peaceful protesters. Israel is like the only country in the world given the exact opposite of the benefit of the doubt before all facts are known. Same stuff, different day.

While the IDF unequivocally succeeded operationally in preventing a mass crossing into Israel, it suffered something of a PR failure in allowing Hamas to set the narrative in world media—according to which Israel was guilty of a "bloodbath" and "carnage."
 

"Hamas wanted as many people killed on the Palestinian side as possible," the senior officer said, "as well as photos of hospitals buckling under the pressure, and they had no qualms about sending human shields to the forefront."
 

"When the dilemma was to defend the Israeli border and our communities near the border on the one hand, or allow rioters to cross over and only have a small number of Palestinian casualties—there was no dilemma at all for soldiers and commanders," he stated.
 

Conricus said the IDF tried to be as precise and judicious as possible in its use of force, only using sniper rifles loaded with NATO-recognized ammunition. He claimed, "We tried to minimize Palestinian casualties. Did we succeed? Unfortunately not. Were there mistakes? Did bullets miss their marks and hit others? Of course there were, but it's incredibly chaotic near the border.
 

"There's tear gas, smoke billowing from tires, shouting, loudspeakers and sirens and mostly thousands of rioters trying to dismantle the fence and lobbing grenades and Molotov cocktails."
 

The IDF Spokesperson's Unit provided an official statement in response, saying only part of Conricus's words were quoted and the quotes were then taken out of context, with the "wider context of his words distorted."
 

Furthermore, the IDF said, his words did not reflect the spirit of the discourse or the army's stances. It was a "conversation with heads of US Jewish communities, as part of the IDF Spokesperson's Unit attempted calls to action given the world over."
 

Nevertheless, the IDF disseminated photos of armed terrorists coming up to the border and attacking soldiers on a 24 hour delay, and footage of Palestinian women and children placed at the front of conflagration points was also late coming.
