Help! SSN applied for but taking forever! I-94 gonna expire

My husband (K1 visa) applied for his SSN march 27th before we got married. We had all documentation and they gave us a letter with a reference number that the application was in process.

The issue is it has been until now and still no word. When I tried calling the office, they said he holdup is hearing back for Department of Homeland Security Verification. On the phone the agent just said its a waiting game and nothing I can do.

His first name and last name are long so I am wondering if that might be an issue (no middle name).

Another problem is we applied in california while living with my family but I have since moved several states away. I can't physically go back to the original social security office we applied at anytime soon. We initially put our family's address expecting to get the card in about two weeks, or worse case they could always forward the card to me no problem. Now that we have moved, what can we do? Go to local social security office? Demand someone look into it?

His I - 94 is going to expire june 19th. I am really worried with only 1 month remaining before he would be ineligible for the card and then we would have to wait for an EAD!

Please help!

Cross post but I am hoping for more replies specific to K1 holders undergoing adjustment of status

For reference, one must have 14 days of legal status remaining in order for them to issue a Social Security card. So for a K-1 entrant, this means within the first 76 days.

As for why your case is going through manual verification, nobody can say for sure but something being off with the name is probably the issue. Or it could have been entered wrong at POE. You could check at a CBP deferred inspection site and verify. You can also check your I-94 online (https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/) and see how it appears there.

Had he ever been issued a ssn before? SSN are for life and if he has and remembers the number he can just go to any office and request a replacement card. Once you have applied for a SSN you cant do it again. You have to wait out whatever they’re doing to your case. I would probably say that since you moved you just missed your mail.

Thanks for the replies!

The name on the I-94 is correct, so no issues there. Maybe the local SSN made an error in name entry? But the reference letter we were given shows the correct name. Argh!

He also has not been issued a SSN, he just came on a K1 visa in march. So this is first time application.

Should we try to go to the local SSN even though that is not where we submitted the new SSN application?

I believe he can still get a SSN 14 days before i-94 expires.

I got my SSN as soon as I arrived under K1 Visa. But when I tried to change my last name after getting married, my i-94 was expiring in like a week or something. And I was told that I would have made it if it was more than 14 days left. Worth to give it a shot!
