Quick Question Regarding DMV

Hello! I have my oath ceremony on May 23 and I decided to change my name during this naturalization process. My question is since I'm changing my name, I'm going to need to update my driver's license. I currently reside in California but I attend college in Texas and I have to go back to school in June for a research opportunity. I'm planning on applying for a passport as soon as I'm finished with my oath ceremony, wait for my passport to come in the mail, and go to the DMV to get a new driver's license. My question is since I won't have a new social security card with my new name on it by the time I renew my license, would that be a problem? I know in order to get the REAL ID thing, you need to provide your SS card. Would it be a problem if I just used my new passport with my new name, my naturalization certificate that has my new name, and my old social security card with my old name on it to get a new license?

Also! I'm planning on updating my citizenship status to a local Social Security Office in Texas. Would that be fine even though I'm not a Texas resident? Thank you!

Is there a reason why you can't go apply for the SSN just like you are applying for the passport right after your oath?

Hi thank you for replying! I've heard people saying to go to social security office after 10 days-2 weeks of my oath since it takes time for them to update my information and etc. Do you think it's better to apply for SSN first?

Hi, just finished my oath yesterday and I confirm based on what the SS representative in the oath instructed. You will need to wait 10days/2 weeks to update all your information with SS.

For now, go with your original plan. The DMV will only require you to complete the renewal  form, provide proof of your legal name change (documents, naturalization cert, passport, etc - just bring everything you have), your old license and your payment.

I did my SSN first. I waited for about week to go the office and they update you it right away. You will get your new card in mail in just a few days. They say 10-14 days to update to be on safer side. It takes a less than that. Also, you can take your Nat. certificate to DMV to update your license. You don't need to wait till you update your SSN and passport to update your license.

You can update it in any SS office. You should be just able to walk in and get it done. Takes about 30 mins.
