So i will just say that i have very evil father in law who insults me in front of my son really really bad, and he insults me based on my nationality and also threten that he will throw me out of usa and that i need to go back to my country. Unfortunately, you can't sue someone for generally being an a--hole or terrible person. I'm sorry to hear you have to put up with someone like that, though.

If you have proof that he physically harmed you, you might have a case, but what are you hoping to gain from suing him anyway? Where is your husband in all of this? I assume you are talking about his father here, so perhaps this calls for a serious conversation with your husband, maybe about keeping your distance from the father in law.

Begs the question why you are anywhere near him.

If you are being physically abused and have evidence of physical abuse, you can take a possible domestic violence route, but that would involve filing a report with the police. You can always look into a restraining order if you feel you are in danger or at risk of physical harm by a person. I'm not sure those actions would be taken just because he shut a door in your face - it would require evidence of substantial physical abuse. But for just making rude comments and name calling... no, not much would be done about that.

Do you live with him or something? I'd also suggest just don't be around someone who's that rude to you, if you can help it.

Are you asking about suing or pressing charges? There is a difference in the two.

I am in a very complex situation. I told my husband million times i think about all the problems with his father but he just won't stand up for me. We unfortunately live in his father house which is by the way not safe at all for kids, no railings around the stairs, no doors on a bathrooms, no door on a besaaments. Mice are cooming out of the holes on the unfinished walls from instalation and wasps are cooming out throuhg the holes on teh celling where light bulbs are... Its just too much, i didnt even know that house is unfished. The problem started when i couldnt stand all that and my son is 2 years now i have to chase him all day long because of too many hazards in a house, not to mention we live in a wild middle of nowhere, i cant drive, i feel like prisioner sometimes. So i sometimes i would leave dished unwashed ( no dishwashe machine) due to feeling sick  and having to deal with my son running all over the house or running outside in a forest ( yes we have bears too and other wild animals). So when i woudlnt wash dishes on time his father would go crazyand throw his anger tantroms. And when my son would live his toys on floor he would throw everything around the house like crazy person and yell. I do want to leave this place, i trully want but my husband is a problem, he lied to me that we gonna leave. Now we saved money to put down payment for a house and get morgage and move, and also buy used car because its much cheaper. But his father convinced him that he puts all money for expensive new car jeep wrangler and now we are left with no money saved at all, and plus car loans, So he told me we have to wait another year to move and save money for a house. I just dont know what to do.

Im not sure, i don't know the difference.

Pressing charges means you seek the help of authorities and/or courts for legal action for someone who has committed a crime or misdemeanor towards you. For instance, if he physically attacks you the police can have him arrested and a protective order can be filed against him.

Suing is when you want compensation (usually monetary) from someone you deem is a fault for damage to you or your property. For instance, if breaks your cellphone, you can sue him to pay for the damages. Note that suing can be done for physical and emotional damages also. It is just a different procedure than filing charges.

Filing charges is immediate action to remove you or protect you from harm.
