K1 visa co sponsor/minimum income requirements

Hello all! I am just at the beginning of the k1 process but I need some guidance.

This past year I was at graduate school and graduated in November. It has taken me a few months to get a job, but now I have one and will be making well over the poverty line requirements. By the time we would be interviewing I would already have a w2 issued showing that I made more money than was required. I also have an employer that is more than willing to write a letter to show stability in my employment. However, because I do not have last years tax returns showing any income I believe it is still

important that I have a co sponsor. My mom has agreed and makes significantly more than the poverty line requirements. I am worried because I have read that the Naples consulate doesnt like co sponsors. Has anyone had recent experience or suggestions? Is my w2 and co sponsorship enough?

Hi and welcome to this journey...

Great job on reading the guidelines, knowledge is key to the success of this journey.

I have never EVER heard of a consulate that "doesn't like" co sponsors. This is not a matter of preference is a matter of complying with requirements. Their requirements dictates that any USC that wants to sponsor a SO (fiance, spouse etc) needs to prove being above the poverty line, and if they don't, to show proof of a co sponsor. They cannot "dislike" a requirement alternative, that they implemented (and approved) themselves...which it leads to my advise number 2: don't worry about rumors or insignificant stuff, this journey is complex enough to worry about silly stuff.

Using a co sponsor is a great idea, especially if you don't feel a 100% comfortable with the number of your previous taxes. I too did the same. Although my now husband was making 4 times the poverty line for the state of florida, the previous year he was unemployed for the 1st half of the year so we didn't want to jeopardize the process...My father in law offered himself so we had absolutely no issues. Now I think we would have been fine without his co sponsorship but didn't want to risk it.

The co sponsorship doesn't take that much, and is pretty much just another set of copies of her transcripts...so definitely do it.

And about the letter, a employment verification letter is what you could submit along with your taxes. Not so sure about a personal letter from your employer but a employment verification later where you can see the salary works fine. You can also add bank account statements and paystubs.

So you are good, don't worry so much ;)

The above is inaccurate. It is true for the 864 (they must take co-sponsors) but for the 134 they dont have to accept a co-sponsor. If your research shows Naples doesnt allow for it then they dont allow for it. The CR path may be better for you.

Can you explain me a little bit better? In 7 years I ve been here I have never seen an US embassy that doesn’t take a co sponsor. The I864 I didn’t use it until I filed for adjustment of status and by the timr we didn’t need a co sponsor.

but for my i-134 (during my k1 visa interview) I did submit my father in law as a co-sponsor with no issues

Theres more info in the regional forums. The 134 is non binding.  So the officers have a lot of discretion on what they accept for it. CUrrently in manila they dont take co-sponsors for the 134 but recently they havent even been asking for a 134 at all. Italy is also known for not accepting co-sponsors for the 134.

The issue with Italy is that it is not like Manila (in that it doesnt have a policy which outright denies co sponsorship applications). But many people have been denied because of co sponsors anyway. I have read some that have been successful, which are the most recent posts, where older posts from 2012-13 seem to have been denied. It seems like it might be better to the CR1. At that point I would have a tax return and probably wouldnt need a co sponsor. Its just makes other aspects hard (time/wedding/ ect.) which I know is not whats most important.
