How long can I drive using my U.K. license before I legally have to change to a US license? Will I be able to use my U.K. license to drive until I can get the correct paperwork/ID? I will be in MD.

Check the md dmv website, they should have the info there

YMMV

You have 60 days from when you move to Maryland.

Accidents happen so I would not recommend pushing this. My husband  was in an accident on his 70th of immigration when someone else ran a stop sign. After I realized everyone was okay, my second thought was thank goodness he just got his Maryland license and I had just put him on my car insurance or this could have been a huge headache for his immigration........

My third thought was now we have to buy two cars in a month (we were about to buy him a car, and my car was totaled). So goes life and immigration. :rolleyes:

Hi, I applied for a driver's a license last week, July 17th. I brought the following documents and Texas DMV accepted them, they just need to do second verification as they can't see my married name in the system.

* SSN and the card/envelope that came with it

* credit card bills ( I was assigned as an authorized user in my husband's credit card)

* letter from USCIS with the envelope (used this as a proof of residency)

* I-94

* passport

* original marriage contract

I have a driver's license from the Philippines but it expired July 6, 1984 because my SSN arrived after the expiration.

I am currently taking Online Driver's Ed and Online Exam by an accredited online agency. After the online driver's ed, I have to pass  the final exam (which fulfills the drivers license written test) and a certificate of completion.

My question is, do I need anything else? I really don't want to go back and forth and wait for 2-3 hours again. :(

Hi @mariia

My husband recently got his Drivers License from Maryland as well while going through the K1 --> AOS process.

It is not true that you have to wait for your EAD in Maryland. He was able to get a 10 month temp license at the Annapolis DMV by them looking him up in the SAVE system to verify his immigration status. If you are okay having your maiden name on your license you should be fine to start the drivers license process then change it when you officially change your name legally (which starts by changing your name at the social security office) then  a couple of days after you will be able to change your name on your license.

Thank you for posting this AshMarty!  My wife is also going through the process at the Annapolis MVA.  I was worried that she would eceive a license that is only valid until the I-94 expires (end of September) as some have suggested.

We have her NOA1, I-94, passport, SS#, utility bills, insurance policy, bank statements, Vietnamese driver's license,  and 3-hour drug and alcohol course certificate.  On the first visit, they took her photo, generated a license number, and administered the vision test, but requested a certified translation of her Vietnamese license.  The translation has to come from a MVA registered translator.  Four days and $120 later, we had the translation.  We met with the same very pleasant MVA employee who generated the ticket needed to take the written (computer) test.

She failed her first attempt at the written test. She took it in Vietnamese, but it is just a Google Translate version of the English test.  She said many of the questions/answers made no sense.  She's taking it again in a few days and will take the English version.  Then she must pass the driving test.  Hopefully she can get this completed before the Fall semester begins so she can drive herself to ESL classes at the community college.
