Greetings. I have filed the K1 Visa for my fiancee and last week received the letter and text stating that it had been received. I am a little concerned that the current situation in Venezuela may slow down or even prevent her from moving forward though. Any thoughts on that?

From what I've learned, this part of the process is primarily when they run background checks on you, the petitioner, as well as check your petition for errors, etc. before they approve. But they are currently behind on I-129f Visa petitions by 6-7 months, which is why the wait is so long.

I think that's almost impossible to tell.  Your fiancee will need certain documents such as police reports and there could be delays there.

But the embassy is US funded and not only immune to the insane inflation but in many ways those who work there be it Venezuelan or American have about the best job in the country.

I'd suggest trying to get any documents that must be obtained from agencies run by the government, be it Municipal or Federal (Federal is in Venezuelan government agencies such as one who might give official birth certificate) ASAP and hope for the best.

Emily and Elton state there is a backlog, but for our K1 it took 8 months to approval so I tend to think that's unrelated to the economic crisis.

Thank you Emily and Elton. Am I able to complete the DI-134 right away? Any thoughts on whether the current situation in Venezuela will hold things up?

Thanks for the advice Balamban. My thoughts were 6-9 months before the whole things is said and done. I am sure it will be closer to 9 months.

All in, it has taken us 11 months, and at times it looked like it was going to be 13-14 months and then *zoom*  It's hard to tell.  I have no idea what it's like for a US citizen to visit.  I imagine that the US is king there but.... one would have to bypass the "official" (as in absurd) exchange rate and I would not want to run afoul of the law there.

An odd suggestion, beware of burandanga if you vist!  Burandanga can be easily extracted from a certain bush and is a scopalomine and a huge amount of burundanga crimes are committed each year, and it is not much talked about.  Do some research and never, ever... take a piece of gum, or a soda that has been offered to you, opened or not.  Google it, the risk is not to your fiance, it's to you--now more than ever you are no longer looked upon as a walking ATM you are now looked upon (should you visit) as a bank vault.

I believe the document which could take the longest to obtain during a political crisis, would be the police certificate (translated in English) that your fiancée will need to have ready for her embassy/consulate interview after your petition has been approved. The rest of the required documentation can be produced by yourself (with the exception of the medical)!

Hope this helps... I understand the stress in that area--My fiancé's nationality and current country are two different places, and his native country has been out of communism barely 30 years, and only in the last 5 years has even allowed the public access to their own citizen files. Getting these documents will be a chore and a half...

WOW! 11 months from the time your application was first received? I will not be visiting Venezuela. I do not want to chance that. We were in the Dominican for a week in February and will be back, in Punta Cana, again in June for 18 days.

Can someone please tell me what is meant by the "cash surrender value" of my life insurance policies?

From what I could find, it's the cash value of your life insurance policy minus the fine of cancelling your policy. Cash Value - Cancellation Fee = Cash Surrender Value. I would imagine you can find this out from your life insurance provider either in your monthly statement, or by calling!

Hi,

I too have a fiancé in Venezuela, we filed in feb, the majority of the wait is to get the first approval from here, 6-9 months, then it takes apps a month to send the paperwork to Caracas. From there the appointment wait time currently seems to be about 2 months. In those 2 months you need to get the medical and police certificates. We are hoping to have everything taken care of by the first week of December. My lawyer did tell me that if things get worse and they close the embassy in Caracas again the paperwork can be forwarded to Bogota Colombia and the interview can be completed there.

Is your fiancee still currently there in Venezuela? The situation is really getting worse every day it seems. Maduro has taken control of the banks and it is going to become increasingly difficult to leave. If someone has to flee for safety reasons, how would that affect the process?

That is one of my concerns about Venezuela too. That the current government  decides to close that embassy or that the US decided to close it. If the Colombian embassy can help then that would be great for those applicants stuck in the middle of the process.

Plenty of places where people have to to other Countries to interview, if it is needed here then no doubt arrangements would be made.
