But she would be living with us in our spare room, so no extra housing expenses. Just the medical expenses, which of course must be taken into consideration.

I urge you to look properly into “just” the medical expenses. How much will her health insurance be in your state? She can’t be a dependent on your scheme. I recall another person posting here, I think in her 60s, having been quoted something like $600-$700/month  I was just reading an article abut all these ER visits that suddenly jump into a few thousand dollars (been there, done that too). My father who seemed quite healthy till a couple of years ago has suddenly had numerous age-related health issues the past couple of years. Thankfully he is a long time citizen and had contributed enough to be getting full Medicare etc. He would literally be either bankrupt or dead otherwise. Many American citizens don’t seem to realize for some reason that benefits are linked to contributions, which your mother in law will never make if she’s looking after your kids. I’d suggest you look up what age related healthcare costs in the US are. From what I recall earlier in this thread you barely made the AOS, your wife will be studying, and you will be supporting all 3 or you (hopefully 4 with baby) on one income? Presumably at some stage your wife will work and you’ll have 2 incomes which will help, but what if there is an issue before that? Will her other daughter be able to help with these costs? We see a number of posts in these forums of poeple who’ve sponsored  parents and then when they get here suddenly realize they can’t actually afford healthcare. Please, please do your homework properly, is all I would ask.

And by the way, it’s very callous of you to characterize all nannies as greedy and insensitive.  Many of them almost become part of the family and really love the kids and family they are with. Expensive in the US, sure, but that’s a reflection of high costs of other things too.

I don't know why she'd be disappointed. Most adults move away from their parents and cope just fine without living with them. I just don't see why people feel the need to move their parents here.

So rude. Guess what, people have different priorities in life and different ideas on what lifestyle they prefer. You have no right to say that people shouldn't need to bring their parents to them.

That wasn't quite what was said. Either way, one has exactly that right to say it. Others can choose to take mind of it or ignore it.

On more practical terms, there is some sentiment that the IR-5 category should be changed or removed. There's also many cases for it to remain.

That’s something that ideally should be considered and figured out before emigrating rather than afterwards though. Immigrants to the US are lucky that it’s even an option - it’s not in most other countries.
