Hi everyone!

I would like to share my recent experience and hope to help you all somehow or at least feel better since we are not alone in this lengthy journey. I filed my I 751 in Oct 2016, completed biometric a month later, but my online status never changed since "We received your application and waived the filing fees..." Until Jan 2018, I decided to file for citizenship before I looked for a new job  that might require me to move (I'm a recent graduate nurse). Amazingly, my N 400 got processed really fast as I think it might be an apology from uscis which I never forgive..lol.

File Jan 08. Received Jan 16. Biometric Feb 09. INTERVIEW April 05!!! (although it said online that my case would be completed till Feb 2019 ???)

I did a little bit research about how N 400 worked along with pending I 751, and there were some threads saying that they would send out another letter closer to the interview date that requires the spouse to accompany for a combo interview. YES, this is true if your I 751 is not adjusted before the interview. I would never file N 400 if I knew it were the case (who is on earth wants others to question and judge their married lives?!). However, the second letter never came to me, and I decided to go alone for the interview.

IO opened the door and the first thing he asked me was "is your wife coming with you?" I said she could not because she has work. He did not say anything else and walked me to the room. He started with the exam first! I got 1 wrong (who is the chief military? I said John Roberts @@, sorry Trump). I corrected myself 5s after but he said it was not a big deal. Then he briefly went through the application with some of the Yes/NO questions, had me signed my name under name change, and whatever would appear on the certificate. Then he started to dig into our married lives.

How much is the rent, who paid via what bank account? Who else lives in the house besides you two? What's my mother in law's name? Where does my wife work? When was your last time travelled together? How come she did not go with you last year? When was your last time travel out of California? How often does your wife go to Mexico? How come you did not go with her?

It was traumatizing because I was not prepared for those memories. It came out of my mouth the way things happened, but the answers were choppy because I needed time to recall under stress and anxiety, even though I acted calm and professional (that's what nursing school has trained me!). Then the IO said the good news was my N 400 was ready to go, but the bad news was my I 751 was pending, so he was not able to make any decision (the computer did not let him recommend for approval). He said "I'm pretty sure you have to come back with your wife. But let me go talk to my supervisor very quick." After 5 mins, he came back with "my supervisor was not here!" (and my head was like it took you that long to figure out?). Then he started to roast me more about our marriage.

More details: What did you guys do last weekend? What did you guys do on Easter? What time did your wife get home on Easter? What did you guys do on your and her birthday? What did you guys do last Xmas? Why did you guys not have kids yet? How come you did not look for a nursing job yet?

Then he started to test me about some of the pictures I submitted in I 751 files: who was in the pictures? when was the first date? how was it? how did you guys meet? how come you finished your nursing degree but your wife did not go to school?

After all the scary interrogation, to me, the IO is a very cool guy. He looks like 23-26 years old, and skateboards to work in vest, that's awesome!!! He is very nice and friendly the way he asks. And sometimes, he laughs at some funny details from my answers. In the end, he said "decision cannot be made yet" and told me I would get the letter which is either request for interview with spouse or oath letter in 2 weeks.

After 25 DAYS, MY CASE GOT APPROVED!

After weeks of recalling (or being haunted by) of the interview, I think the IO was trying his best to approve me, and conducted the I 751 interview alone instead of being with my spouse. I read online that IO is also under supervision of their boss who is the one that makes the final decision. However, the "IO's recommendation" will play a big role in case approval.

I finally get to the end of my "uscis relationship," I all feel you guys, 1 day lasts like a decade!!! But keep your hopes up and always be prepared! My key advice is always be respectful to the IO, be calm, polite, and professional to make a good impression on them, even when they hand you "decision cannot be made." That moment, everything was shut down in front of me, but I tried my best to put a smile on my face, said "thank you" and gave him a good-bye handshake!

Good luck to everyone!

Hello! Congratulations!! May I just ask, when did you file your I-751 and what service center? :)

God has perfect timing; never early, never late. It takes a little patience and it takes a lot of faith but it's worth the wait. ❤️

Thank you and yeah, Oct 2016 at California Center, from what I heard, the most overloaded center along with Vermont.

Congratulations!

My case is very similar to yours, the difference is that the IO did not interview me for the I-751 at all, only the N-400,  but said that he would schedule another interview date for my spouse and I to go back together then he can approve the cases. Still waiting, at least there is a movement that my case was transferred to another office , hopefully that's not  computer errors that have been going on.

Good luck man! I 751 is simply easy as long as your spouse agrees to show up for an interview and have married joint tax filing, you have 80% of passing rate! It just sucks because the waiting game never stops.

you are welcome! Since I spoke to him fluently, he skipped the reading part. I just had to write one sentence "People elect Congress" and that was it!

What was approved 25 days later, the N400, the I751 or both?

We were in a similar boat, but I was at the N400 interview with my wife, so the IO conducted a short I751 interview with both of us first (we also never received any notice for me to accompany her for the N400 with a pending I751).  After the I751 interview, I was escorted out and my wife had her N400 interview.  For the N400, the system said a day later that she was approved and an oath was to be scheduled.  I thought the IO implied that the I751 was also approved, but a few days later we received a NOA stating the I751 was transferred to NBC in Missouri, we just finally got the official NOA approval for the I751, so now we are only waiting for the oath to be scheduled.

Congratz for both of you! The one got approved is my N 400! The online status of I 751 never changed. But a week after the approval, I also received the transfer letter and an approval letter of I 751 saying that I would receive my 10-year green card within 60 days (it will never happen). So I guess you just ignore anything related to I 751 now since your N 400 is approved. I just got my Oath yesterday, still overwhelmed because my IO said my Oath might be in June. We are almost done bruh!

Hey guys so I also have my i751 still pending applied in CALIFORNIA service center in NOV 2016.

I applied for n400 under 3year rule in NOV 2017..

On 05/2018 I got a letter saying my I751 was transferred to Lee's  summit MO I believe which is USCIS NATIONAL BENEFITS CENTER? to ''speed up processing time'' as it states on letter

on 06/10 I got my interview notice for N400 which says I will have interview on this month the day 16. It does not say anything about ROC/I751 on it...

It only says bring your green card/ spouse birth certificate/ marriage certificate...

I been assuming it will be a combo interview but I heard negative comments saying I must get a lawyer and ask for a combo interview? I won't get an interview because they will have to wait for a decision from that office my case was sent to?

Can anyone explain this better to me? Kinda worried now, thanks

hi i am in same situation, applied for ROC on May 2016 and N-40O on July 2017 my I 751 case was transferred to Lee's  summit MO on May 8 2018 got letter saying ' in order to speed up ..." then on June 20th 2018 my N400  scheduled  for interview on July 28th so i was worrying  and talked to tier 2 officer he told me do NOT  worry just go for ur N400 interview . when i told him but my ROC still pending how they can approve my N400 . then he said  well if they need more info about your  I 751 case then they may call ur wife for interview with later. from my understanding it is good idea to go with my wife just incase  and to finish everything in same day . you dont need to go with lawyer. all you need to get most recently supporting doc, and get prepared for your both cases. good luck!
