Sending money

When I send money, I use Xoom.  I transfer USD to a USD bank account.  I have found that that the fixed fee is less than 1% and I don't get hosed on the conversion.

Step-daughter works out when and where to convert to PHP.

Finally done.

We too use xoom.  For her sister's PNB account for college, expenses and room and board.  For cash pickup for her mom in the provinces.  No atm nearby.  Sometimes we add load the on the 4 family phones.

I'd appreciate in the future not to be credited with a quote I did not make

I only selected the text and clicked quote selection. I have no idea why it put you as the poster.

I think that was my quote, so I will reply to your question.  I have an account set up with WU through my computer.  I send money directly from my bank account to her bank account in the Phils.  I double checked to see if there are any charges for a larger amount like yours and the transaction is still no fees or service charges.  Now, there is a 0-6 business day wait for the transaction to take.  YMMV.  However, I just sent some cash on Saturday and she already received the deposit in her account as of this minute.  And WU has not even debited my account yet, being that it is the weekend here.  Not sure if 0-6 business days is acceptable to you, however me being Pake, I can live with that for Flee!

Aloha

I was reading your post and saw you reference "pake" and thoought WT*&^?? So I had to go check your location...Hahaha made me laugh. So anyway, Remitly takes between 5-6 days as well and they never finish early. They do have excellent service, but I will give WU a try. I just checked and they do have an app, however I will just set up an account and try online first time

We use Zoom as well and pretty pleased with them. We have never had an issue at all using that service so that is why we are sticking with them. We use them to send money to my SIL to help take care of my MIL and also to send money to our niece for her monthly stipend amount while she is in college. We told her that as long as she is doing good in school she gets a whopping 2k php a month.

I went ahead and setup a WU account. Sent money, and the transaction was just as smooth as Remitly and the same amount of time. Before I sent I checked Remitly's exchange rate and it was a little over 1 peso less than WU at the time I sent. I also downloaded the  app to make it easier in the future.

Oh thank you, thank you.  I finally made a useful post.  😀

Yeah, this thread is really old.  Many years ago many of the members did not like WU.  WU is not perfect, but they do give better rates than others that I have checked.  To each their own.

Western Union use to be about the only way to send money, now of days many options.  Nothing wrong with WU, plus for your security you can use assume names and addresses when sending to Philippines.

I just bite the bullet and use W/U. I'm sure their are better options but for the amount I send and the frequency I send it WU works just fine.

Finally done...

I'm surprised, I've only seen one mention of Transferwise (online: transferwise.com -- not affiliated in any way).

It seems Xoom is pretty popular, but I just checked -- at the moment Xoom's exchange rate is 48.173 . Transferwise is at 49.89 . Transferwise always uses the "real exchange rate" (their words), and it's always 0.1 or 0.2 pesos above the rate I see on yahoo finance, which is my exchange rate bible.

Fees for Xoom and Transferwise are about the same for a bank transfer, although if you set up and fund an account at Transferwise, their fees are vanishingly small. Transferwise is fast and always reliable -- but they only do bank transfers, not cash pickup or delivery.

I might be cheap, but saving $8 - $20 (fees and exchange rate) helps out at both ends.

I use WorldRemit and I've compared it to Xoom. It's cheaper by a few dollars. Transfer to bank account with xoom is a few days. It's instant with WorldRemit

My xoom bank to bank transfers are instantaneous with no added service charge

YMMV

The reason for that hatred of WU was that if you used them online they charged a different amount that if you did it in person. I mean they charged amounts that were significantly higher
