It probably depends on which country

Last time I traveled to Philippines I sent myself 3 Western Unions. $900, $800,$700. I did them at one time and nothing was asked from me, this was couple years ago.

I know I sent about $250 to a friend of mine in the UAE last year and they held it for "security reasons" until I could verify myself online.

Western Union, Remitly, etc...   In order for you to transfer dollars to a Philippines bank account you have to be listed on the account along with your significant other.  I know because I set up an account on my second visit there jointly with my wife in the Philippines.  I had to appear in person at the bank to open the joint account. My wife is here now so we closed that account in the Philippines on my last visit.  But to be honest it is easier and faster to use Western or Remitly.  You can save a little money by visiting your local Safeway store or other and using cash rather than doing it on-line.  But for me doing it on-line is easiest and we send money every month to my wife's family.  We just check which service is cheaper each time we are going to send money.  It is also less expensive to use a Debit Card on-line.  Just before sending we just check what the exchange rates are and the fees charged by the two services and then send based upon that.  Good luck.

I would be careful using Western Union online, don't set up an automatic "wallet" where it has your card info saved. I had a bad experience about 2 years ago where someone got a hold of my online account info in the Philippines and tried to make 50 different transactions overnight! Luckily they weren't able to drain my account but they did get away with around $300. The worst part was that Western Union wouldn't reimburse me because they said that the person who picked it up had all the right information to pick it up (basically they had ID proof in person, which is a lie because my wife was no where near this town/location!), and Visa wouldn't reimburse me either, for the same reason!  Anyways, I stick to sending from a physical location now. We are going to open a bank account when we travel to the Philippines in both our names when we travel there this year and then just use remitly or a similar bank to bank transfer.

To get your name on the acct you will need an ACR card and/or and LTO (depends on the bank), most required at least the ACR card from a USC

You send dollars to yourself ... that is a different game.

When I used WU Online I always sent it in USD as well because their exchange rate is HORRIBLE, I think it's even worse than Xoom in actuality. But then they charge you extra for sending in dollars as well.

I spend a lot of money when I go to the Philippines.

I easily spend over $1000 per week there if I am going solo.

I hit beaches in the day, and go club hopping at night.  I bounce around the country since airfare is pretty darn cheap.

Just when you think you have TDS eradicate,  a new case shows up.

Ya WU exchange rate is worse than XOOM    but if the fee is like $15 that is still no bargain unless you send enough money.  ;)    (well you know from our adventure)

Buang ka. I ain't spending no $1000 a week no where. I will be extravagant some weeks if I spent maybe $1-200 a week if that, but that usually means I have to go down to Tagum City.

You add about 20 years to your life and your perspective on money will change.  I was a lot like you at your age, Now of days I am into enjoying what I have earned.  For getting the most out of your money Philippines is a great place.

Mexico used to be pretty cheap, but those days are gone. Now Philippines is where I can maximize my US dollars.

We use western union always and we send USD and let my wife's relative find the best rate. I have never has a problem 7.99 to me seems pretty cheap for a safe reliable money transfer half way around the world.

It's $10 here, wonder why your's is cheaper? And I agree it is very convenient to US WU....but I'm thinking a bank to bank transfer at some point will be much better idea for more regular and cheaper deposits.
