So I was just crossing through the POE at between the Windsor, Canada and Detroit, USA border and I presented my unexpired green card with a photocopy of my I-797 (which I just received a couple days ago). 

1) He asked me what the letter was - I replied it is a one-year extension of my green card. He then replied why do you have an extension for an unexpired green card. I was not aware of this and I actually don't think that is factual (from what I understand, you can travel with a copy). Now to vent....I am consistently baffled how untrained, unprofessional, and unknowledgeable about immigration laws our front-line officials are - this applies to both Canada and the USA. It is completely unacceptable and should be reprimanded and corrected. 

Thanks for posting about your experience. Firstly, as long as your GC is current, there should be no need for you to show the I-797. And yes, I am baffled that it would be "illegal" for you to carry a photocopy. That sounds misinformed. Having said that, where there is a legitimate need for the I-797, i.e., when you are traveling with an expired GC, you would need to show the original and not a photocopy. That's just my understanding.
