Saw this and thought of you, Steve.  Can't exactly relate because I went private schools for most of my schooling and we live in a Scandinavian-style school district (i.e. everyone gets educated together, regardless of level).

Well, ok...since its about education....

 

The mayor and the school chancellor are idiots, and they're clowns. That's the general consensus in our corner. 

 

1-They say there's too many Asian kids in the elite schools. Isn't that what you wanted the minorities to do? Excel? Would they say there is too many blacks and Latinos in those schools if it was 70% blacks and Latinos? 

 

2- why are you lowering the bar on education? Try raising the bar for the students who are lacking. 

 

3- NY state has plenty of free resources available for these lower income people, advertise it! Help them use it!

 

4- those Asian students in those schools are not ###### affluent! They're poor immigrants like I was!!

 

5- you can't teach kids who don't want to learn! The parents are the ones who must get these kids into the mindset. 

 

6- the kids make the school. Not the other way around. 

 

7- parents who struggle to get into a better school zone, you are penalizing their hard work, and their kids. Some of these other kids will be disruptive!

 

8- the elite schools will be elite no more!

 

9- why are you throwing the Asians under the bus??

 

10-For each seat you reserve, a better kid will lose his seat. Where's THAT kids reward for HIS hard work??

We have over 75,000 educators in NYC. Some superintendents with decades of experience. Some with incredible track records of bringing districts up double and triple digits in performance.

The NYC mayor's control of the NYC schools is by appointment by the state. It's 1 year at a time. It may or may not be extended. Nothing gets done without state approval. The governor and the mayor hate each other. So, the answer is no! (Thank heavens)...

I imagine what will happen, as it happens in other school districts, is that the wealthier, smarter students will go to private school.  Although, the private schools in the NY area are competitive to get into as well.

 

I think the way they are thinking about it is wrong.  You know we had my oldest in a very very good school district in CT, but because she was below average, she just fell through the cracks.  Being in a school with equals has helped her develop confidence and they've helped her catch up.  I can imagine it would be the same for these 25% - you have children who might be far below grade level being thrown to the academic wolves.  Their self confidence is going to suffer.

 

However, the Scandinavian model says that the top students aren't important, what matters is equalizing the playing field and pulling the bottom up.  I think there is an argument for that manner of thinking as well.

 

The fundamental question should be: what is the purpose of public schools?
