We won't mind to stay near the airport. The commute to the NYC is good from that area

Some airbnb are cheaper, many are not.  Read reviews for safety factors.  People generally will review if a place is hazardous or if the owners are difficult.   I've used VRBO but not airbnb. But I am not sure VRBO is good for shorter term rentals. It's quite possible that a hotel may just suit your needs better.

JFK and Newark are both main airports. It's more convenient and closer to fly into Newark.

Nah, we're flying into Chicago. Renting a car there, going to Toronto, Boston and then NYC. And after that is Philadelphia, D.C., Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Savannah
