Troll has been screaming since he got up half an hour ago.  The only real solution is to let it fizzle out.  He's pissed that he woke up just to see daddy drive away.

Now he and the oldest and alternating screams at each other.  This is the true magic of parenthood that no one warns you about.

the true magic of parenthood

Hard to keep perspective amidst the chaos, granted man.

When Mini-B. was about 2 years old, we took a day-trip and stopped at a mall's play area.  A young mother wheelchaired her child, also about 2, into the play area.  The child had a feeding-tube.  The mother was softly pointing out the features of the play area to her child, heart-rending man.

Ever since, whenever Mini-B. has acted up and Mrs. T-B. has begun to lose patience, we've looked at her and somberly said "feeding-tube," restore perspective man.

Mini-B.'s first day of second grade is today, up-growing wee man.

Mrs. T-B. met the teechur and again signed up to be a skool volunteer, engaged she man.

Mrs. T-B. did some reconnaissance while there, poll other parents she man.

Teechur (like Kindergarten teechur) is old and has reputation for strictness, sigh man.

Maybe Mini-B. can handle it better this time, experienced with it wee man.

While it's good to remember that you could have it worse, it's also good occasionally to lose your s*** on your kid so they understand that this behavior is just not friggin acceptable.  (Time outs generally work well so that at least the parent is getting a break.)

While we were driving with hubs and his work mates yesterday to lunch, we all laughed about how ALL of our parents had at some point said "YOU STOP BICKERING OR I WILL PULL THIS CAR OVER!"  When you fear your parent's wrath, sometimes you act a little better, especially when you are assured of their love as well.  There's obviously a balance!   I remember being a bit younger than the kiddos age, and my mother was scolding me for being a mouthy little brat, and I pushed her away from me since she was up in my face.  The look that went over her face sent a chill from head to toe and I tried to get the heck outta there asap.  Didn't work btw, and it was quite some time before I back talked again.  I was, by all accounts, an actually very responsible teenager.  I know she loves me, and has always tried to do what was best, even if I didn't want her to at the time.  I'm glad of the lessons I was taught, even if I didn't enjoy them at the time.  ;)  It's amazing what being disappointed in your child's behavior will do to correct said behavior when they know you love them.

Lectures.. lord mercy... I never found a lecture to ever be effective.  Kids just zone us out.  (just like I zoned out my parents and they zoned out their parents... LOL) But we all lecture our kids none-the-less!

Hahaha, yep 1000 miles would work!  I've told my husband that a real vacation never involves children.

My oldest is also very caring and so is the Troll to the Tank, but she has learned she has to respond in kind to him or he totally steamrolls her.

I have a little perspective on that, as you might remember with the Troll.  When he first transferred hospitals as a baby, they told us his prognosis was likely going to be poor.  This was when they had him on anti-seizure meds and he had more wires coming out him than I thought possible.  It wouldn't have been a rare diagnosis in my family as my uncle had lifelong seizures that required him to be institutionalized.   I'm glad for the kids' health, but boy is that kid some kind of special level of intense.  The pediatrician claims it is because he is intelligent.  LOL, sure thing there, doc.

If only it were occasionally.  I swear the middle child does something that could kill himself or someone else on the daily.

Most indelible memory of my childhood relative to parental discipline was an incident where the kitchen curtains caught on fire because I was playing with matches with my brother. Our mother didn't know what to do with us so she told us to wait in the garage until our father returned home from work. While envisioning all types of punishment that involved his leather belt, he instead came into the garage and simply told us, "I don't know when I'll be able to trust you boys again," and then turned and left. Our hearts sank about 5 miles into the ground when he said that. We hewed to the straight and narrow for several years after that.
