SSN is NOT required for health insurance...  It is a confusion based on the new requirements.  They are only required to collect the SSN if a the person has an SSN

i  have read many posts of here just lately about this subject even the man who said they will not allow me to add my wife on my work medical policy without a SS number

My wife came here on a K-1 at the end of 2015, I added her to my insurance and she didn't have a SSN. Insurance companies can and will use the A#.

Also, the 3rd paragraph down on the attached PDF from SSA states a SSN is not needed for private insurance

Girlfriends/boyfriends are not qualified to be added to health insurance plans.

Not always true..  Many benefit plans do allow domestic partner benefits

YMMV

Many times even the people in HR or insurance agent do not know the actual requirements. But an SSN is truly not required...sometimes some poking and prodding is necessary to get to somebody who does understand the requirements.

You know what's funny? In 2 companies that I worked temporarily the head of HR did not know the difference between US citizen and  legal resident! I had to explain them the difference.

If at all possible have the baby in usa!!!! i just went though having our daughter in Thailand, and well after $1,000 in DNA test and yes you can not be in the country to register it but it goes faster and much less paperwork. They look down on you if you are not married yet and have a baby. We are on a K1 visa and our daughter was born on March 5th this year, we had several trips to the consulate and finally she said "she looks to asian to be yours" so they forced a DNA test on us and that was $1,000 and the process has to be followed to the letter and its a pain in the butt.

If at all i would highly recommend having the baby in USA. We got our certificate and passport approved today and will get it in 3-4 weeks. All in all it was a month long process ( yes i know not that long compared to waiting for a k1, but the k1 was honestly easier and less hassle ) If we have another child we plan on having it in the USA no matter if we are currently living in my fiancees home country or not.

Hope this helps some how.

1000.00 is way out of line. You got taken for a ride there. Just had a paternity test done this past march(2018) that was a full on legal one to keep me from paying for a child that wasn't mine, and it held up in court. I paid 9800 Baht( 315 US dollars) for my legal DNA test. The most expensive place i found was PLC Laboratories and they were only 16,400 Baht ( 525 US dollars). So worst case scenario only about half of what you paid, and the Thai government wouldn't let me leave the country until the results were back, so I know about pain in the butt. It only took 5 days for the results. For reference this is where I went below in case someone else ends up holding the bag on a kid that is not yours, not to mention almost ruining my relationship with my current fiancee who I am waiting on a K1 for. It was some real Jerry Springer S%&* going on in the Land of Smiles.

It was not for the Thai government or courts , the USA government requires you to use specific lab non located in Thailand are allowed or legal for usa citizenship dna test. Had it been a question of me being the father to prove to the thai government yes it would have been much cheaper.

Applying citizenship for a foreign born baby can cause you to have to get a dna test to prove to the USA government that you are the parent. Your situation and the situation of the OP is different from theres and mine. The USA government will not accept any test for legal or citizenship that was not performed by a certified lab that goes through chain of custody protocols and follows the strict guidelines put out by the USA government.

Bummer. Guess it's more expensive to prove the kid is yours. I had to prove it wasn't mine. But there are limited DNA places you can go for the Thai government too, because it has to be done outside of Thailand because they are worried about false records, or as they put it " Human Error" I took that to mean fraud. Sorry you had to pay that. I had to get it done here in the states also, and it was only 450 for a DNA test that was court legal. Only difference between the 2 is you can do a cheap one for your own peace of mind for like 200 bucks in the USA, but anything for the courts has to have the specimens collected from a authorized collection place. That's probably why they charged so much. I know here I had to go to a authorized collection location, and that added to the cost.

For what it's worth, I paid $525 for DNA testing for my sons CRBA. Fairly painless other than FedEx lost my sons DNA sample for about a week going from Jakarta to the lab in Virginia. Luckily they they found it because my son was living about 16 hours from the embassy where they collected the sample.
