Why not just send your passport to your country's consulate in the USA and get it updated to show your married name?

If you travel without this change, then when you return to the USA your passport will differ from your green card (I'm assuming that's what you've got). This is when the marriage certificate comes into play.

Because if they already bought a ticket, and get their passport changed they won't be able to fly. Passport must match the ticket.

Exactly, as other said, take the marriage certificate with you, it won't be an issue.

Also, it's easier said than done. Some countries (like mine) will put you through bureaucratic hell to do that and will charge you over a thousand bucks. And in my case, it would require a visit to some govt agencies in my country in person. So, I guess I'm not going to change my last name in the passport :(

Filed AOS from F-1
Green Card approved on 01/04/07
Conditions removed 01/29/09

Primarily you must get in touch with the consulate of your country. I did, it did not take much. So I chose to report my marriage and amend my passport (it still has the original biographic page, same passport -with my maiden name etc and another oage with the amendments - married name etc signed and stamped by the consulate general.)

OR,

keep purchasing tickets using maiden name, using the same foreign passport (without amendments) plus carrying with you the marriage certificate to show you were married (to show that it matches your GC info later on).

Good luck!
