US Montreal Consulate - Administrative Processing

Hello everyone!

I was recently offered an internship in the United States (unpaid), for three months. I'm a Canadian citizen so I was told by customs & the American consulate that I shouldn't need a B-1 visa, but while talking to other people that had the same internship as me, they decided to obtain one just in case (which I decided to do too). However, I had my interview on the 23rd of April. I was told that the last time I exited the United States on a J-1 visa, the customs didn't accomplish a formality (registering the fact that I exited the country I think). The agent said that it happens all the time, it's not a big problem, but the process will take longer.

I'm supposed to leave on the 4th of May (everything is paid). I emailed them to ask how long it could take and they answered me up to 90 days (I'd have to say goodbye to the internship at that point).

What can I do? It am absolutely heartbroken that I won't be able to do my internship (it was an extremely long process to obtain it).

I was thinking of maybe getting my passport back and trying to cross the border anyways...

Thank you for anyone's help or suggestions.
