He wasn't being paid for stand for the anthem. He was being paid to play football, which he still did just as well (or not well) as he would have if he didn't kneel.

 

It's not like he stopped in the middle of a play to protest. "Hey I'm gonna pass this ball in a second, but let me just stop and kneel to protest for a moment"
