If you want to cut down on paper take the tax transcripts which are just a few pages instead of tax returns.

Exactly. Take your Tax Transcripts which are only a few pages and are "official" proof of you having done your taxes.

Also, please remember, USCIS values the transcripts more than the returns unless the returns are certified by IRS. It takes a long time to obtain the certified copy from IRS (up to 120 days) and you have pay $50 for each year. Transcripts are a much better option and you can download them in a few minutes.

You can't take electronic devices into the embassy or field office

Depends on the field office....I observed fellow applicants on cell phones and even some on laptops while in the waiting room for my interview.

I spent most of the time waiting playing Cookie Jam on my tablet.

Agreed. They don't have restriction on taking electronics at the location I went to. But, there is a clear notice that cell phone use was prohibited in the waiting area. However,  I haven't seen them ever enforcing it. My guess is they are sensitive about people taking pictures (speculating here) but don't really care about if you reading your email.

Not sure that is accurate. They didn't stop me to bring my phone when I went through security but the use of it in waiting area was prohibited but there was no requirement to  power it off. I don't know if their policy varies depending on the office.

I went to the trouble of securing tax transcripts - free online if you are the spouse of the head of the household - otherwise you can only order them by phone or by mail.

The officer did not even ask for mine on the day of the interview - it does not mean I will not need them for some other purpose so I am keeping those.

The only thing he asked for was paperwork showing that my speeding ticket was adjudicated.  He did not keep any of those copies.

At the Jacksonville ASC, I was allowed to bring a cell phone into the building (you can also bring a tablet), but your device had to be set to silent or vibrate - and when the interview started the officer asked me to shut it off completely.
