Certified Copy for the Nat. Certificate

I am going to use the Certified True Copy I obtained from USCIS to apply for the passport. I wonder if anyone has been successful in obtaining the passport using it? The state dept. website unambiguously states a Certified True Copy can be submitted as proof of citizenship instead of the original. But, I saw some threads that they asked for the original anyways.

That's not what State Dept. website says:

Also, according to this: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/requirements/citizenship-evidence.html

There is no ambiguity in this. Yet, you are saying they don't accept Certified True Copy? That would be State Department contradicting itself. Although I will not be surprised.  :D

You can use the certified true copy for anything BUT a passport application as noted in the link below---

You will need to submit your original certificate of naturalization or citizenship AND a photocopy when applying for your U.S. passport. USCIS does not prohibit photocopies of certificates when providing proof of U.S. citizenship to the Department of State

i was asked for the original certificate when i got my us-passport.  the person at the courthouse said he was aware of the $550 cost to replace it, so they make sure it doesn't get misplaced or lost.

Just out of curiosity I called the national passport center help line and asked if they will accept certified copy of Nat. Cert. as evidence of citizenship. They said they would. We will see.

Take both the original and the true certified copy (remember it has to be certified by USCIS themselves, not a notary public) when you apply for the passport in case the passport agent insists on submitting the original.

Good suggestion. I will take both. I do have a "Certified True Copy" from the USCIS from Norfolk field office. It comes with a letter signed by the the Director of the field office attesting to the authenticity of the copy. Both the copy and letter has the raised seal by USCIS. The USCIS officer who gave me the docs told me that the letter must be submitted along with the copy in order for it to be recognized as "Certified True Copy". We will see.

And you could have avoided commenting if you didn't have something productive to offer.

Good idea

And never a good idea on this site to ask others not to comment.
