Letting your local council know that you are leaving?

When looking on the government website about moving abroad it states "You need to contact your local council if you move or retire abroad, and give them a forwarding address" which is fine, but everyone I talk to at my local council has no idea what I'm talking about when I ask them for help. Is there a specific department that I should try calling instead?

You’re literally asking all the questions I’ve been about to post about. The P85 and this are the two I’ve been thinking about along with calling the International Pension Centre.

I guess this this is only for if you own a house and are renting it out while abroad. Or if you need to cancel your council tax. Other than that, you can keep up with voting stuff online so don’t see what else you’d need to tell them, really.

I have so many questions about everything, sometimes here is the best place to come. I guess you're right though, I don't own a house or pay council tax, so I'll just skip that part.

All you need to do is fill out and mail a P85. If you have banking mail that needs to follow you, you'll need to contact each individual financial institution and bank. If you have a student loan, you'll need to get in contact with the SLC and go through that annoying process. You can continue to vote for up to 15 years abroad, and the instructions how to do that can all be found on gov.uk

Does it have to be one that is mailed or can I use the online version? My P45 is being mailed to me as it is arriving at my current residence two days after I leave the country, and then I was going to use it to fill in the online P85 when I was in the states. Then again I suppose I could mail the hard copy from the states if necessary. Thank you for all of your help.

Back when my husband left the UK, you were not eligible to fill anything out online, instead you had to mail the form to them directly.
