Has anyone been through the medical at Knightsbridge for their US visa? What happens? How much? What injections should I have? I'm moving to Colorado.

Hi, at Knightsbridge you are required to have a chest X-ray, blood sample taken, urine sample and an examination with a doctor. On the day you must bring with you 4 passport style photos, police certificate, photo ID, vaccination record and a brief medical history from your doctor (outlining any major illnesses or surgeries you have had). There is also a questionnaire to fill out and bring with you. In my experience it was straightforward and everyone was very friendly.

It costs £300 and extra if you require any vaccinations. (Prices listed here http://www.knightsbridge-doctors.com/practice-fees.htm).

The vaccinations required are listed here: vaccine_chart.pdf

Bare in mind if you are applying on a K visa you aren’t required to have these before your entry into the USA, however you WILL need them when you adjust status to permenant resident so it’s worth considering getting them done at this point.

Police certificate? How do I get that?

You can apply online here https://www.acro.police.uk/police_certificates.aspx or via post (info on website). It costs £45.

You will need your police certificate for your interview too. They are only valid for 6 months so don’t get it too far in advance.

If you are over the age of 18 you only have a few shots that pertain to you.

Quote
  • Td or Tdap - Tetanus/diptheria/pertussis or get DT, DTP or DtaP. The latest shot must be no longer than 10 years ago or you need a booster. If you have a record of receiving pertussis, then the Td is okay for the booster.
  • MMR - (if born in 1957 or later)-Mumps/measles/rubella. It's two doses in your life, but if you get the first dose, and 4 weeks haven't passed by your medical, they will waive the second dose for "insufficient time interval". If you only had one dose as a child, get a second one before the medical.
  • Varicella - Not routinely given in the UK . A history of having chickenpox excuses you from the shot. They take your word for it at the visa medical exam.
  • Influenza – Required during flu season only, October 1 through March 31. This was a new recommendation dated November 2010 for all ages over 6 months. Older lists will say flu shots for over age 50. It changed. The list on the London embassy website is out of date since 2009. Don’t follow it.

No you do not need any other shots that may be on some list, and no you don't need tons of other shots just in case. The best thing to do, is I'd advise you to go to your GP and obtain the vaccinations from there. Other options are obtaining them via Boots or another local pharmacy/drug store chain. That way you're getting it done beforehand, AND saving major amounts of money that you'd lose if getting them at Knightsbridge. Another problem with Knightsbridge is that many people attempt to get the shots they may need there, and find the nurse less than forthcoming about what they do or don't need. So if you get everything done beforehand, make sure you have proof of the vaccinations with you when you go into Knightsbridge.

The Knightsbridge exam is fairly straightforward and is very thorough. If you have had a past of mental illness, self harm, or drug use you will be required to discuss this history. In the case of mental illness or self harm, you'd need an additional letter from your GP describing the diagnosis, resolution or medication, and the words ''patient is not a threat to themselves or others''. Knightsbridge also no longer seems to perform genital exams, which was always a point of exasperation for patients. A urine sample is now required. You can search for a ton of reviews/experiences regarding Knightsbridge on this forum.
