I was just wondering (in a desperate bid to explain this process) if anyone has a more common name than mine?

Andrew Smith

Cause surely thats keeping every backwoods fbi station in every single state busy...

Oh and on a side note, i just got a job at fed-ex, where they had to send my lovely name for (what i was told) was a fbi namecheck for america, and checks in the both canada and england where i have lived in the past.

It took a week.

.....Ahhh the power of money

Isn't it easier waiting for the name checks when your SO is in the country with you? I don't think I'll mind all the waiting once he's actually here with me. At least we'll be waiting together, in the same place.

I would say from experience it IS easier to wait when you are together, however to be going through this again is wearing heavily on us. At what point, and after how many checks can my husband live normally??

yes, he's here. but at this point:

1.) he cannot work

2.) he cannot qualify for financial aid to attend school

3.) we cannot qualify for a mortgage

4.) he cannot travel back home to visit his family (AP has expired)

we live in a constant state of "wait and see"...and after nearly a year and a half of waiting...it's getting OLD. some folks here have even been waiting much longer than we have. it's emotionally draining.

Yes it's easier waiting when you are together.

Soapbox time:

Getting the visa and 'being together' is only the beginning of your immigration journey. Your responsibilites as a USC to your foreign spouse are in my opinion heavy.

If you truly love that person and want them to be able to move about freely in and out of this country, to have a modicum of rights and protection, to be able to drive, to be able to bank, and to be competitive for employment - then you must adjust their status to Permanent Resident.

And until the 10 YEAR GREENCARD is in hand, your spouses rights in this country are not protected.

No namecheck - no greencard - limbo land. Your spouse is essentially a person without legal status in America. Not a comfortable spot to be in, in my opinion.

me thinks someone has suggested we stop complaining

I have heard *oh but your together* statement a several times, the distinction is the heartache of missing your SO is gone, anger and frustration has replaced it due to dealing with immigration for an inordinate amount of time.

922 days later? yeah i'm bitter.

I'm almost sick of hearing from other members 'oh but you're together'. Frankly it's one reason I'm not spending as much time here.

In my mind, anyone who can't see the gravity of getting their spouses 'papers in order' is an irresponsible partner.

That probably sounds harsh but the cold hard reality is that getting your spouse here is only half the battle. Until their status is adjusted, the government could make them leave.

Not likely to happen but it's possible.

Your 'coupleness' is not protected until adjustment is complete.

We have been having this discussion the last couple of weeks and Annie feels tha same way. She said that it feels like it can be taken away at a moments notice.

She wants the security of having the card, and yet here we sit in limbo AKA "FBI Name Check"

Yes we are together, but that does not abate the fears. We would much rather trade and have had all of this nonsense done before, while we both were working in our respective Country's.

I have been drafting a letter to my congressman to address these issues. I recomend we all get talking to our elected officials

Rebecca,

I always thought the rights of a Permanent Resident are the same, whether with a 2-year or 10-year GreenCard.

If there is a difference, would you mind posting it?

I would appreciate it very much! :star:

I don't know that there is any legal difference, Mrs. J. Mermaid or someone else might know if there are.

In my mind, conditional permanent resident means just that - with conditions - and that's why those conditions must be lifted in two years.

In other words, it could all be taken away.
