There's another verse that I like as well and it's from the Quran....something about us being a veil over each other? Does anyone know what the verse is? When I first read it I cried.

Islam doesn't teach that women were made from ribs. That's a Christian concept.

the confusion might stem from having read this hadith as a straight translation:

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said: “Treat women kindly. Woman has been created from a rib and the most bent part of the rib is the uppermost. If you try to turn it straight, you will break it. And if you leave it alone, it will remain bent as it is. So treat women kindly.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

which was explained to me as being that in arabic, the words “created from” do not necessarily refer to the substance of creation; they can also refer to the nature of something. but if someone didn't know better, and just took it to mean "created from", i can see how one might get that idea, as inaccurate as it may be.

Thank you for that, Kakya. That hadith is very popular, but has no basis in the Quran, which is very specific regarding the origins of humans, sans the Christian rib concept. Its popularity has lead to many misconceptions about the Islamic view of creation, and the migration of former Christians to Islam has helped to add to its appeal.

The poem is lovely, one can certainly agree with its sentiments. It's source is not Islam, not that anyone ever said it was. I simply wanted to make it clear that it's not.

You know every once in a while I crave bacon, so I go to Whole Foods and get this really good thick turkey bacon that has black pepper around it. It's just *not* the same though. I've never tried beef ribs....do they really taste that different? I used to LOVE marinating pork ribs in olive oil, tons of garlic, salt pepper and lemon and then grilling them. YUM.
