We were married  December of 2017.  We have sent in the "last" of the paperwork i485, I-131 and so forth.  All the paper work is received and currently being processed.  Per immigration, paper work ok, just advised to give it additional time.

Our main question, is her son is getting married this August and we are at a cross road trying to establish whether she can send her passport back to UK for renewal due to name change. Is the travel document a seperate  booklet or something that gets attached to existing passport?  Is a picture uk driving licence acceptable ID if passport sent away?

The travel document usually goes as a combo on your work permit card  (plastic card)

Please note you can not travel alone with that card you still need to use your passport. The card is only used to return to usa.

Can you wait until after you get a green card to send the passport ?

Just use the maiden name on your travel booking itineraries.

If it gets lost in the mail it can be seriously frustrating before you get your GC but if its expired and you have to update it immediately than make sure you track the package.

And when I say you cant travel without a passport I meant outside of the usa. Inside usa you can use a state id.
