Hi there:

I have an odd question.  Is it possible to get marriage license and get marriage certificate in the same day in Alabama? If possible which county, since there is no wait in Alabama. My fiance is getting to US at the end of may and we want to get married, SS# and AOS as soon as possible. Will we need SS# for it or even have applied for one before we get married?

Any input on how to proceed next...thanks for any help

Probably can't because it needs to get recorded in the "book" and then sent to you

oh ok...that makes sence. i heard about some counties in Alabama where the moment you buy the marriage license is the same as getting a certificate, since the moment you sign for it...its recorded there and then. Not mine of course

A lot of the county websites offer a list of officiants....when you look up the requirements to get married in your county the list will be available.

My advice would be to find an officiant first and talk to him/her to determine a day to get married.

I could have been married on the same day I received the license  (but I'm in Arkansas and it varies by state)

Hint:  Ask the officiant if you can carry the signed marriage license to the courthouse yourself, in case you can get marriage certificates (plural -- you'll need them) more rapidly than otherwise.  Mrs. T-B. & I did this, and we got ours the same day.  It really sped up applying for AOS, getting bank accounts, etc.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Thanks. I had no idea I had that option to take it myself back to the courthouse.

You can also get married at the courthouse, in which case everything is done "in house". For my county, the turn around time for the marriage license is 24 hours, I believe. We get married there and can go back the following business day to pick it up. Obviously, this isn't an appealing option to everyone, but for example; in our case, we've decided to push our traditional wedding ceremony/reception out to October so that we can enjoy planning it and allow time for international relatives to attend. Once my fiancé arrives stateside next month, we will be getting legally married at the courthouse only so we can go ahead and move forward with things like AOS, bank accounts, adding him to my insurance, etc. To each their own, obviously, but doing it this way may alleviate some stress upfront and if you so choose, allow you to still have the "traditional" wedding later on if that is also important to you both.

Håll ut, y'all.

I got my SSN before we got married, got a marriage license and after signing it with an officiant, we also took it back ourselves and asked for 3-4 certified copies.

I then went back to SA to change the name on my SSN. Got myself as a joint owner on my husband's account as soon as I had the marriage certificate in hand.

Don't worry if you have to wait a few days in between getting a licence and actually getting married, it won't delay things by that much.

  • Parties aged 16-17 must provide a certified copy of their birth certificate and be accompanied by both parents. Both parents must provide a photo I.D. If one or both parents are deceased, proper evidence of such must be provided.
  • Parties aged 18 years + must provide a valid government issued photo I.D. i.e. Driver’s license, Non-Driver’s license, Passport.
  • The filing fee is $84.50. Payment types accepted are cash, credit and debit cards. No checks are accepted.
  • There is no blood test required to obtain a marriage license. Once the license has been issued keep in mind the following:
    • A marriage license issued in Jefferson County is valid only in the State of Alabama.
    • The license expires in thirty (30) days from the issuance date.
    • You must give the license to the person performing the marriage ceremony. The person performing the ceremony will complete the relevant portion of the license and return it to the office of the Judge of Probate in a self-addressed envelope provided with the license.
    • Probate Court personnel will record your marriage license and mail you a marriage certificate (certified copy) in the envelope that you will address when you apply for the license. We will also mail the license to Montgomery after our records are completed.
    • Please check the marriage license very carefully for errors. After the license has been forwarded to Montgomery, you must have court action to make any corrections.
    • A spouse can use the certified copy of the license you will receive from us to have their name changed on the driver’s license, social security card and other records.
    • Ceremonies can be performed at the Birmingham courthouse by an on-site minister and by the Probate Judge in the Bessemer Courthouse by appointment. The on-site ministers in Birmingham are not Jefferson County employees, and maintain their own schedules. Arrangements between parties being married and the ministers are a private matter and do not involve Jefferson County.
  • This is for Birmingham but all countries in Alabama require an appointment to perform the marriage / you will be able to schedule only after getting the marriage licence /  can be done within the week

Check out Tennessee and Georgia state web sites as you are close to both
