My fiancee got here in the US last friday. What should we do next? We're a bit confused,  should we get her SSN first before getting married? We live in CA. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

The question with that is when do you plan on y'all getting married? If you wait to long until like day 80 of the 90 days they will not issue her a SSN. But if you get married soon then you can go to the SSA with your marriage license and get it in the married name if she takes your name.

Some people say that she needs to get her SSN first because sometimes they require it to get marriage license.

Some people as in who? Call up the clerk of court of riverside county and see what you need to get a marriage license.

Sorry if that came off as calleous but how do you think people get their marriage licenses and they are here illegally in CA?

OP,  be aware that if she get her SSN before getting married, they will issue the ssn card under her maiden name. And then if she want to have it under her married name she will have to go again and show them the marriage certificate. That is if she wants to have her new married name on the card.

When I married here in Ft Lauderdale, having a SSN was never required. They only needed my passport. Then with the marriage cert  we went to the SSN office and got my ssn card under my married name.

It depends on the state. FL requires SSN for a marriage license.

OP, call and ask if you need one for your state for a license. Good luck.

Apply for the ssn two weeks after she arrives do not do it after your married. This could vary state to state but I know a couple who waited until after they were married and the beneficiary (the husband) was told since he was married and the current visa was a fiance visa they said he couldn't get it until after his AOS....

There's a lot of stuff you can't do without a ssn so play it safe and apply before getting married.

This advise of waiting two weeks was given here on the VJ guides when the I-94 was still in hardcopy. Now that the I-94 is electronic, this is no longer true. You can check your I-94 record online as soon as you land. If it's already available, you most certainly can already apply for an SSN with it! Don't wait two weeks, get it as soon as you can. It is very helpful to have an SSN in getting practical stuff done. Don't worry if your SSN is issued in your married name. You can always get the name changed later after you get married.

We married in Fort Lauderdale (FL) and they never required me to have a ssn to get the marriage license. They only requested for my passport.  I applied for the SSN after our wedding at courthouse.
