https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/on-leadership/wp/2018/04/17/starbucks-is-turning-to-a-type-of-workplace-training-that-really-took-off-after-ferguson/?utm_term=.e33258fa4e70

Starbucks, battling an uproar over the arrest of two black men while they were waiting for a friend at one of the coffee chain’s stores last week, said Tuesday it would close more than 8,000 of its company-owned stores in the United States for several hours on May 29 to provide “racial bias” training for nearly 175,000 employees. While not the first time the coffee giant has decided to close all of its company-owned stores, the move underscores how important the company sees the addition of a type of training that has exploded in popularity in recent years.

Starbucks' announcement came one day after executives from the company said they would add “unconscious bias” training — a popular concept in corporate diversity circles in recent years that teaches employees to be aware of their ingrained biases as well as strategies for blunting the effects of those biases. Yet while some diversity experts applauded the decision — especially the bold move to close stores to carry out the training — others expressed surprise that Starbucks was not already offering such a program to store managers.

Just wondered if anybody had gone through these things, seems a nice paid skive.

This is not unprecedented. When Howard Schultz came back to work after betraying Seattle by selling the Sonics,(another story)  he discovered the staff could not make a cup of coffee the way he wanted. He shut the place down across the country and everyone took coffee making 101.

Sometimes its good for a leader to stop everything and make sure we are on the same page as a team. I worked under Kevin Johnson at another company and I have the highest respect for his leadership skills. This is the right thing.

Nearest Starbucks is 45 minutes drive away, making an extra trip does not seem very ecological.

i think it's great that they're doing this. I also hope they stop the whole "you can't use the restroom without ordering something in an area with lots of homeless people" bull too.

I think most, all of the local Restaurants in my County have this sign or something like it.

They are not a public restroom facility.
