It's no different than buying a gun.. you don't need an ID to buy a gun but it's common practice for gun shops to ask for an ID.

From a libertarian perspective I don't believe that the government has the right to register someone to vote against their will. Nor does the act itself cause a person to want to go vote. It does not help the individuals who want to vote but cannot because of issues regarding documentation. Furthermore, it is alarming to know that it could cause non-citizens to be registered to vote against their will, which complicates matters for naturalization later on. This measure is also getting adopted in MD, and I am not happy about it. The DMV is a vast department of idiots.... I watched them like a hawk to ensure they didn't do it to my husband... but I can think of how many it may happen to.

This is what I was thinking the whole time while reading the story.

Every time Mrs. T-B. changed her driver's license, I went with her and confirmed that the clerk didn't register her to vote.

Sometimes I feel marginalized, not really sure that is something that makes it hard to actually vote.

I don't think it's hard either.. but I'm not going to down the people who want to make the process easier or more streamline. 

 

Simply, we need a higher overall turnout .

I am all for automatic registration, just as I am all for proving one's identity for voting.  The one thing I wonder is will the DMVs/SOSs be accessing federal, state and local records to make sure they are registering someone that is actually eligible to vote, or simply just registering anyone regardless if they are a USC, LPR, legal or illegal alien?
