On Tuesday, New Jersey became the 13th state to adopt automatic voter registration—and the third to do so this year—continuing a trend that has seen blue states expand access to the ballot in an attempt to combat Republican voter suppression efforts. “The ability to exercise your basic right to vote has become a right that’s more important now than arguably any other time in our nation’s history,” Gov. Phil Murphy, a Democrat who was elected last year, told Mother Jones. “Opening democracy up and making it work for as many folks as possible has never been more important.”

Murphy signed the bill, which was passed by the Democratic-controlled Legislature, on Tuesday afternoon at Trenton’s Hughes Justice Complex, which houses the state’s justice system. The new legislation could register nearly 600,000 new voters, according to a study by the Center for American Progress. “It will get a ton more people registered,” said Murphy. “We will be in the top rung of open democracy.”

I love the Leftist rags referring to "Republican voter suppression efforts" and the automatic assumption that all those that are not registered are core DNC voters.  Regardless, who cares about automatic voter registration, everyone eligible should be registered, but I love the DNC suppression of identification laws that only prove a person is an eligible voter.

So do you agree that an automatic process for eligible voters is reasonable?

So by not automatically registering people to vote the republicans are suppressing voters? I fail to follow that logic. I wonder if someone is too lazy or doesn't care enough to register to vote on their own do we even want them voting? Just asking.

I believe I said that.  Do you believe people ought to prove their identity to actually vote?

If someone is that disinterested they still won't vote. Just being registered doesn't mean they are going to show up to vote.

I agree with you though. I don't personally care about high voter turnout out. I care that the people voting are informed and want to vote.

The automatic process, for me, just takes one step out of the process for those who want to vote. I like itm

Isn't the problem we see here where people who are not Citizens have been registered.

I think it is is racist to require ID.

So you favour ID check.

ID checks are fine as long as you are willing to pay tax dollars to help these citzen get their IDs.

If not, then you are simply trying to suppress someone's vote.

Nobody needs ID otherwise.

Ya we made have crossed wires a bit. I edit a lot of my posts and change things around so it's understandable.

Yes I think people should have to prove their identity. We need to make sure the tools to do so are easy and accessible for everyone. Automatically registering anyone who is eligible who gets a driver's license is one great method, in my opinion, because it links a form of ID (their license) to their registration. For those, proving identity should be easy since they got the license at the same time they registered.

For people who don't have a driver's license, we would need a different way.

Like I said.. ID checks are fine.

But we need to create a system that makes it easier to vote ,not harder.
