good morning

my wife and i will be traveling internationally for the first time with her us passport in late june, she is submitting her passport application today. i have a few questions, when we go to the post office, do they actually take the naturalization certificate and keep it? second, do we have to update anything? i know when we used to come back into the US, they would always check her permanent resident card and her foreign passport, along with taking fingerprints, now she will just have to show her us passport correct? no more fingerprints?

thank you

yes,

As part of your application, you will need to submit your original Certificate of Naturalization (as well as a photocopy of the front and back) to the U.S. State Department. The Certificate will serve as your Proof of U.S. Citizenship and Proof of Identity. As a result, you will be without your proof of citizenship.Jun 26, 2017

think like this (we Americans have to submit an original birth ceriticate to prove the same US citizenship)  it will be returned

be sure you copy it before submitting it

They take the original and send it in with the application.  You will receive it back, mailed separately from the US passport.

I would advise keeping a photocopy of it for your records if the worst-case scenario happens (it happens rarely, but it DOES happen where people don't get it back).

You mean other than getting the passport?  She can update her status with Social Security, later on after returning from her trip, if she wishes.

She is guaranteed entry as a United States citizen.  Congrats to your wife, btw :)

so the united states post office doesn't make it easy...

we had an appointment, then got a call at 9am stating theres no clerk or something. we had to scramble to find a walk in post office, took a taxi, and got there at 11am, and it says online 12pm it stops for the passport walk ins...the guy told us no more, and it was only 11am,

so now my question is there any other place we can get this done? because the post office doesn't seem to want to take our money...

If you have Global Entry, you need to update your passport info.  No appointment necessary, just walk in with your new US Passport.
