Hey guys! our process is almost done thank God. At least for now I can go and be with my husband after almost two years of waiting. But, we encountered an "issue". We went to the interview at the embassy located in the DR, got approved, everybody super happy, yay and all...but, when we were home organizing all of our papers we noticed that we didn't get back our marriage certificate and my birth certificate, which are super important docs. They kept the originals!

What ought we to do? I went today to pick up my passport and received an envelope that I am not supposed to open. It's for the immigration officer at the US airport. I wonder if the documents are there?

I called the embassy phone line, and the agent told me that the documents that they didn't give back it's because they retain them. What is that supposed to mean? Aren't we never getting those docs back?

Those of you that have been through the process with the embassy in the DR please advise.

Thank you so much and good luck to all of those that are still waiting. Lots of patience my dears. Just when it looks like it's never ending, it gets fast!

It's pretty normal to not get documents back. Always suggested to get extra copies as generally the embassy will retain anything you give them and or they do end up in the packet you give to immigrations upon entering the US, which they will keep.

The original documents were kept by the consulate after my wife's interview (Taiwan).  Do NOT open that envelope you received.....keep it protected and sealed until you give it to the officer at POE.  I suggest obtaining more originals from the appropriate issuing agency in your country.

I don't know how to reply directly to missileman and Ben&Zian, but thanks very much for your prompt reply.

Yeah I see now that I will have to get copies of those. I hope it's possible for a marriage certificate. I know for my birth certificate is.

Thanks!

Si solo tienes que ir a la oficialia donde te casaste, con la fecha pagar el impuesto y te dan una copia si la quieres legalizar es tu opcion.
